Outreach College invites applications for a full-time Assistant Specialist Faculty position to serve as a Program Specialistin International Programs. Appointment to this position is annually renewable subject to performance and availability of funds.
Duties and Responsibilities
Program Specialist
  • Teach 10 hours of non-credit English classes per week during the spring and fall semesters.
  • Coordinate programs and courses.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise curriculum as needed.
  • Work cooperatively with faculty and staff within the university and professionals in business and non -profit organizations to design, develop, and implement programs for international students and working professionals.
  • Research potential new opportunities through analysis of national educational trends, networking with other education professionals, and maintaining close relationships with faculty across campus.
  • Cultivate and establish productive relationships with campus departments, other universities, and business and non-profit organizations to grow enrollments and to ensure programming is in alignment with other institutions of higher education.
  • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of qualified instructors for the delivery of programs and courses.
  • Engage in research appropriate to the faculty field or area of specialization, particularly that which may lead to presentation or publication within appropriate scholarly venues.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and marketing efforts for international student programs.
  • Collaborate with marketing and other staff on developing promotional strategies and materials.
  • Perform independently at a high level; responsible for program innovation and academic quality.
  • Perform related duties as needed.

Assistant Specialist (S3) Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters degree in English as a Second Language (ESL)/Second Language Studies/TESOL from a college or university of recognized standing with at least 30 credits of graduate study beyond the Masters.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in ESL teaching in an in-person or online classroom setting.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in ESL curriculum development, including designing and implementing an online ESL course.
  • Demonstrated increasing professional maturity in job responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English commensurate with an instructor's role as a language model.
  • Experience learning a foreign or second language.
  • Cross-cultural experiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with Hawaiian culture and cultures of the United States.
  • Demonstrated successful experience using a learning management system to deliver ESL courses.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.
  • Demonstrated evidence of professional development and current involvement in the field of ESL.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Possession of a PhD English as a Second Language (ESL)/Second Language Studies/TESOL or terminal degree from a college or university of recognized standing in a field relevant to the position.
  • Four or more years of experience in ESL teaching in an in-person or online classroom setting.
  • Familiarity with the curricula, academic policies and procedures of Outreach College's International Programs Department.
  • Demonstrated experience with accreditation process in an intensive ESL program.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Japanese.
  • Demonstrated experience networking with professionals in ESL both nationally and internationally.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering university programs for working professionals and international students.
  • Teaching experience in a continuing education environment or to adult learners.
  • Experience managing teams of professionals.
  • Experience with online learning and innovative approaches for international students.
  • Demonstrated experience in program innovation, assessment, development, implementation, and management.
