Job description

CDF’s mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. The CDF Freedom Schools® program is a direct service initiative coordinated nationally by the Children’s Defense Fund in partnership with local community organizations. It is an educational and cultural enrichment program that provides summer options for children and strengthens family and community involvement.

The mission of CDF Freedom Schools programs is to boost student motivations to read, generate more positive attitudes toward learning, increase self-esteem and connect the needs of children and families to the resources of their communities. The program serves children in grades kindergarten through twelfth for six to eight weeks. The activity-based Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC), which is aligned to the Common Core State Standards, integrates reading, conflict resolution, and social action, and is designed to promote social, cultural, and historical awareness. A multi-year assessment of CDF Freedom Schools program sites continuously demonstrates the effectiveness of the IRC, which has proven to avert children’s summer learning loss in reading achievement.

The role, emphasizing parent engagement and staff development, requires an individual who, while not overseeing daily operations, is instrumental in the success of a CDF Freedom Schools program running from May 20 to July 12, 2024. A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience, alongside a Master's degree in Education, is mandatory for this position. Ideally, the candidate will have a background as a CDF Freedom Schools Servant Leader Intern, equipped with the skills to mentor a diverse, intergenerational team. Commitment to the program’s missions, ability to work synergistically with all involved parties, and an in-depth awareness of the community's cultural and social dynamics are crucial for this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement dynamic outreach strategies to effectively promote the Freedom Schools programs within the community, targeting potential students, their families, and other crucial stakeholders.
  • Forge and sustain robust partnerships with community organizations, educational institutions, and others to amplify program reach and foster collaborative ventures.
  • Act as Freedom Schools' ambassador at community gatherings, enhancing the visibility and understanding of our mission.
  • Design and execute comprehensive training programs for Site Coordinators, Servant Leader Interns, and additional program staff, ensuring high-level preparation for impactful program delivery.
  • Work closely with the curriculum team to make sure all personnel are aligned with the program's educational goals and student outcomes.
  • Offer continuous professional development and mentoring to enhance staff skills and performance.
  • Engage in program development activities, collaborating with the Program Director and curriculum specialists to innovate and improve our offerings.
  • Lead the charge in program evaluation, deploying strategies to measure effectiveness, gather feedback, and assess the overall impact on the community.
  • Analyze program data to inform future strategy, ensuring decisions are data-driven and aim at continuous improvement.
  • Ensure meticulous data management and integrity, adhering to privacy standards and leveraging insights for program enhancement.
  • Collaborate across teams and with external partners to ensure a cohesive approach to Program Outreach, training, and evaluation, aligned with our strategic goals.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years experience in teaching and/or educational program management is required.
  • Previous involvement as a Servant Leader Intern in a CDF Freedom Schools program is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, capable of inspiring and managing a diverse, multigenerational team.
  • Strategic thinker, with the capability to turn plans into actionable results.
  • A motivator with an eye for detail and adept at long-term project oversight.
  • Deep commitment to the educational success and welfare of children.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both in writing and verbally.
  • Professional, positive demeanor, setting an example for others.
  • Must be able to attend all mandatory training and meetings as dictated by the national CDF Freedom Schools staff.
  • Committed to executing the CDF Freedom Schools program with utmost fidelity and to being present on-site for the entirety of the program's duration.

This role is pivotal in ensuring the effective outreach, training, and evaluation of our Freedom Schools programs, requiring a blend of strategic planning, community engagement, and leadership. If you are passionate about making a meaningful impact in the lives of children and communities, we encourage you to apply.
