Job description

Provide organizational and technical supervision of supervisors and production workers for the operations department. Ensure that processes are run safely to maximize productivity. Supervise all plant operations that affect the production schedule. Assure coordination with other Departments for equipment maintenance, sample analysis, planning and troubleshooting.


  • Supervise team to maintain and increase safety, efficiency and skills and promote a cooperative attitude with subordinates. Manages four supervisors and one relief supervisor.
  • Recognize the importance of process consistency, and continually work to improve it by initiating efforts to remove system (common) causes, and removing special cause variation, using tools such as SPC, failure mode and effects analysis. Reduce equipment downtime and delays between operations. Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures.
  •  Accomplish schedule requirements for internal and external customers in line with appropriate priorities based on the manufacturing/maintenance plan.
  • Maintain accurate records of materials in inventory. Maintain work in process inventories as directed. Initiate and follow-up on requisitions/work order (including safety) for supplies, process inputs, and maintenance work to insure safe, effective operation of the area.
  • Train, give clear instructions, and ensure employee understanding of production processes. Provide employees with an understanding of work group and divisional plans, needs, and priorities.
  • Organize tasks and activities for effective accomplishment of responsibilities and objectives. Utilize the appropriate resources to accomplish plans, and follow through.
  • Continually monitor and improve manufacturing costs with respect to overall performance. Interface with Operations Manager and Accounting to quantity cost savings ideas.
  • Complete all required reports, records, and measurements, i.e. log daily production, write work and purchase orders, approve time cards, submit weekly reports to area manager, write waivers.
  • Effectively practice Performance Based Management by coaching and developing employees, and assuring effective alignment with the matrix functions.
  • Supports efforts to implement and maintain the Responsible Care® Management System in line with the requirements of the RC14001® technical specification, as applicable to the site/region.
  • As necessary supporting and leading disciplinary action in cooperation with Union bargaining requirements.

  • Strong knowledge of chemical manufacturing, process controls and associated equipment.
  • Knowledge in areas such as confined space entry, lockout / tagout, hotwork permitting, etc.
  • Knowledge of quality control and testing principles; including product uniformity/variations and root cause analysis.
  • Strong safety orientation and knowledge of environmental and safety rules and reporting procedures.
  • Knowledge and ability in Accident / Near Miss Investigation / Reporting procedures
  • Ability to train, coach and counsel employees, lead meetings and interface with cross functional groups across plant. Ability to interact with, motivate and persuade others.
  • Troubleshooting and mechanical skills in order to understand requirements and ensure resolution of equipment breakdown. High level of technical knowledge is required in order to solve problems.
  • Minimum of five years experience in a manufacturing environment, including prior leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Some college or vocational training preferred.
