The Professional Apprentice Program is a training ground to provide learning and teaching opportunities for Apprentices during their time at the School. The Program recruits a talented group of people to take part in an intensive, hands-on experience, participating in a variety of roles from daily administrative activities to production operations. Apprentices will participate in workshops, discussions and/or other opportunities that will support, develop, and expand on the skills to help them succeed within the workplace and their chosen career paths.

This is a full-time position. This apprenticeship is for those who are looking to pursue a management role in the technical implementation of theatrical productions. The apprentice will focus on computer aided drafting (CAD), labor and material estimation, analysis of structural and aesthetic requirements for construction, rigging, shop management, installation, and strike.

 

Salary: $16-$17.75 per hour, or $24,320 - $29,820 annual dependent on contract dates

Role Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Technical Director with daily office management.
  • Create technical construction and installation drawings, with assistance from TD, for productions as necessary.
  • Communicate drawings to carpenters and monitor construction of built units.
  • Act as technical manager for assigned productions, a point person for scenery related issues who tracks and manages the show from budgeting through strike.
  • Assist in construction, installation and strike of scenic elements when necessary, ensuring safe practices are used.
  • Attend production meetings and tech rehearsals as needed.
  • Assist with tracking of material inventory and advise on material purchases.
  • Read and review all rehearsal and performance reports; assist in coordination of daily schedule to complete notes in a timely manner.
  • Accurately track project usage of inventory items.
  • Work at elevated heights on ladders, personnel lifts, in the grid, and on temporary structure.
  • Follow safety guidelines for all Juilliard facilities and equipment.
  • Work weekends and evenings as needed
  • Meet deadlines specified by the Technical Director

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • All apprentices will need basic knowledge of the craft they intend to pursue. As such, we are asking for any of the following training: Bachelor's Degree; Related professional experience or transferable skills; A combination of both educational or professional experience.
  • Be able to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.

 

Preferred Background:

  • Previous experience in the support of opera, drama, and dance productions.
  • Drafting experience.
  • Welding experience.
  • Safe Theatrical Rigging
  • Bachelor's degree in technical theater
