The Principal Process Safety Risk Engineer is responsible for leading and directing Process Safety and risk management programs for highly hazardous processes including flammable materials, combustible dust, fire prevention, and chemical management in manufacturing, technology, and distributed operations across GE Appliances.
This position will provide Engineering and EHS operational support to all GE Appliances operations, manage and execute projects, and provide subject matter expertise to drive Process Safety and fire prevention compliance and foster a culture of EHS rigor. This position will also respond to emergencies and systematically mitigate short-term and long-term Process Safety and business continuity risks (e.g., fire prevention). Areas for risk mitigation include but are not limited to product and process development activities, manufacturing and material flow, factory and warehouse construction and modification, and infrastructure upgrades.
Responsibilities include implementing and improving business policies and management systems; developing standards and training to support business operations; guiding, teaching, coaching, and mentoring EHS and other business Operations leaders; and driving a collaborative, problem-solving culture that supports open reporting and delivers business results.

How You'll Create Possibilities
Technical Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement sustainable Process Safety management (PSM) programs with key performance indicators to set goals and measure results. Lead and organize annual business PSM program review. Conduct routine site visits to understand needs, complete gap assessments, build relationships with site/service teams, provide technical support, and validate finding closure.
  • Execute PSM audit program and emergency preparedness drills, identifying gaps and driving corrective actions to closure.
  • Lead and assist in the design, equipment specifications, and installation of projects and changes to ensure all applicable codes are met, including fire protection.
  • Serve as a project engineer for fire prevention projects.
  • Deliver simple, strong, sustainable compliance and risk management solutions that are integrated in daily business operations.
  • Manage the engineering with property insurance provider, establish fire prevention and risk reduction priorities with cost effective and consistent solutions to address recommendations and secure funding.
  • Manage jurisdictional vessel inspection program with insurance provider.
  • Develop and deliver effective training and tools to help site/service operations leaders provide accurate, timely decisions and solutions to their operational teams.
  • Use data analytics and partner cross-functionally to analyze trends and identify strategic business opportunities.
  • Support and learn from incident investigations and leverage enterprise-wide solutions and best practices.

Standards and Compliance:
  • Drive compliance with all agency and company requirements regarding Process Safety and fire prevention.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain tools and standards to support business needs based on compliance requirements, business risk profile, change management needs, performance objectives, and are congruent with parent company policies and systems.
  • Provide input for business risk assessments including heat maps to ensure that management systems consider and address both short- and long-term operational risks.
  • Develop sustainable management systems, processes, and procedures that are integrated in the business lean enterprise operating processes (e.g., Process Safety management and fire prevention).
  • Maintain the Process Safety and high risk operations to reflect current regulations and standards. Develop and deliver training and implementation strategy for EHS and Supply Chain Leadership.

Cross-functional Work and Leadership:
  • Participate on EHS leadership team and provide input for annual Hoshin development and risk strategies.
  • Develop and maintain excellent internal and external stakeholder relationships (e.g., Distribution, Mabe, Technology)
  • Through benchmarking, government relations, and industry associations, conduct trend analysis, assess new applicable technologies, and ensure emerging risks and regulations are identified and escalated to the GEA Senior Director of EHS and Supply Chain VP. Develop and communicate corresponding risk management solutions and options. (e.g., AIChE, CCPS, NFPA, AHAM)
  • As a senior professional, participate in growing the AME and EHS/PSM organizations' capability. This includes mentoring and guiding more junior team members as well as adding to the body of knowledge of the departments.
  • Guide, train, and develop new PSM Leaders and Plant Leadership.
  • Regular communication and coordination with external emergency response providers. Respond to questions and/or concerns received from internal and external stakeholders. Ensure timely, accurate responses. (e.g., local fire departments)
  • Drive a collaborative, problem-solving culture that supports open reporting and sustainable achievement of business results.

What You'll Bring to Our Team
  • Prior experience in a large scale manufacturing environment with highly hazardous processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of PSM regulations and their application in manufacturing, budgeting and resource planning, change management processes, and contractor management.
  • Experience with flammable liquid and gas processing and applicable standards.
  • Experience with risk identification tools and incident investigation tools such as Bowtie, Process and Hazard Analysis (HAZOP.)
  • Compliance auditing and gap assessment skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively to drive change; strong influencing skills.
  • Experience using data analytics to drive strategy and priorities. Strong computer literacy including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional teams across multiple levels of an organization including; salary and shop floor operators/skilled trade members, external stakeholders, and with suppliers and vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team- based matrix environment with ability to take ownership of cross-functional program deliverables and ability to drive decisions based on the overall benefit to the company. Experience as an effective facilitator and trainer.
  • Strong organization, project management, and presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to execute multiple concurrent programs and projects.
  • A self-starter capable of working without supervision.
  • Experience responding to emergency situations such as fires and spills.
  • Proven record of problem solving and achieving sustainable performance results.
  • Ability to mentor, train, coach, and grow other PSM professionals and more junior team members.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering OR Bachelor's degree in another field and must obtain CCPSC, the CCPS Certified Process Safety Professional within12 months of starting position. 10+ years of experience with Process Safety and risk management leading and implementing compliance and risk management programs in a manufacturing environment with demonstrated sustainable results.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong knowledge of regulations and standards including but not limited to OSHA, NFPA, and Industry Standards. Experience working with Union workforce. Experience with Lean manufacturing principles. Advanced computer skills.
Working Conditions:
Working conditions are normal for a high volume manufacturing environment. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment including but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed work boots, and hardhat. Frequent walking in a manufacturing plant environment. 10-30% travel may be for domestic and/or international travel to plants, subsidiaries, etc. Hours & Weekends: Some off-shift and weekends will be required.
