Job description

 

The  OSB Process Engineer - Variability/Quality is central to the technical and process control expertise of the OSB Operation. The scope of this position is to drive continuous improvement results through, data-based and priority setting, decision making. This position will also improve mill reliability by strategically aligning the mill's daily activities to best practice standards, and measuring results. The Process Engineer will have a strong interaction with both the equipment, as well as the maintenance and operation personnel. This is a ‘hands-on’ shop floor-focused approach to engineering, incorporating aspects of mechanical engineering, reliability engineer, quality engineering, and Process Engineering.

What you will do:

This position is intended to spend the majority of their time improving how the equipment works, reducing waste and scrap, improving throughput, reducing cycle times, and reducing human errors to a minimum. These responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for all aspects of process optimization to reduce variability and increase production while reducing costs.
  • Identify areas for process optimization improvement within the operation and implement the delivery of margin improvement (cost savings) results.
  • Measure, analyze and reduce process variability and increase throughput in the following areas:
  • -Stranders – flake quality and fines minimization
  • -Dryers – furnace optimization, dryer operation, and moisture control
  • -Press --  board quality, raw material usage, and press cycle time optimization
  • -Finishing – cycle optimization and defect minimization
  • Create and submit project AR’s and manage said projects from conception, through design, to installation, commissioning, and handover, on time and within budget.
  • Train, teach, and coach operators and other personnel with any current or future process aspects which may impact quality, cost, or performance.
  • Implement and provide training in analytical problem-solving techniques.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Work with internal resources and/or specialist consultants to develop comprehensive Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) plans.
  • Develop solutions for the risks identified within the DHA by utilizing external resources that specialize in:
  • Fire Detection / Explosion Prevention / Suppression Systems
  • Air Systems
  • Engineering and Design resources
  • Work with our internal Technical and Engineering Departments to develop a comprehensive installation plan with budgets and timelines based on the results of the DHA
  • Obtain all necessary technical data
  • Projecting cost development for budget approval purposes.
  • Gather and provide inputs to complete Capital approval process including Accounts Receivable documentation.
  • Manage approved projects to ensure they are initiated and executed with safety as key priority while achieving expectations regarding timelines and budgets.
  • Provide status reports on capital projects underway.
  • Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are observed, including NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) expectations.
  • Utilize internal / external support, industry best practices and prior experiences to determine specific initiatives and innovations would systematically and sustainably provide a reduction of risk in a cost-effective manner.

 

Minimum qualifications you will need:

  • Eligible to legally work in the United States
  • University degree (B. Eng.) in a relevant discipline (Chemical/ Process/ Manufacturing/ Industrial/ Electrical/ Mechanical/Civil) or equivalent work experience
  • Process Improvement or Project Management experience (minimum 2 years)
  • Experience in heavy industrial / manufacturing environments managing projects
  • An awareness of the environmental impact of design ideas
  • Excellent communication skills - written, verbal, and presentation
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • An understanding of manufacturing processes and construction methods
  • Solid team engagement skills to encourage inclusion, participation, and effective sharing of ideas

  • Preference is given to candidates with knowledge of process safety improvement opportunities in the areas of thermal oil management, dust mitigation, reduction of human-machine interface
  • Advantageous to have experience with Risk Assessment and MOC (Management of Change) initiatives in a heavy industrial environment.
