Performs work involved with the supervision, care and transport of Detention Center inmates and related activities as assigned. This is an entry level probationary position used for training and evaluation of a probationary officer at the Missoula County Detention Facility and at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy..
Representative Examples of Work
Participates in a prescribed Detention Officer training program to learn required, policies, procedures and practices for dealing with the needs, demands and requirements of incarcerated adults. Oversees inmates and provides for their needs and requirements in accordance with established policies and procedures. Provides or obtains emergency medical aid to inmates. Searches inmates and inspects cells to control contraband and verify cleanliness and sanitation according to policies and procedures. Observes conduct of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes. Directs activities from a control room, including opening and closing doors, logging inmate locations, preparing count sheets and ensuring that daily schedules of inmate activities are completed. Patrols the detention center for evidence of forbidden activities as outlined in the inmate rule manual and policy manual. May supervise inmate workers in the detention center on cleaning and other assignments. Records booking information including booking questions and medical and mental health questionnaires. Escorts inmates to and from court and medical appointments. Enters and retrieves information from the Criminal Justice teletype system. Tabulates miscellaneous data in report form. Writes incident reports on inmate activity, violations of facility rules and criminal activity in the detention center.
Minimum Qualifications
Must meet minimum requirements as set forth by Montana POST Council:
  • must be a citizen of the United States
  • must be at least 18 years of age
  • must be fingerprinted and subject to a background check to disclose any criminal records
  • may not have been convicted of a crime for which he or she could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary
  • must be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation
  • must be a high school graduate or have passed the general education development test and have been issued an equivalency certificate by the superintendent of public instruction, an appropriate issuing agency, another state or the federal government
  • must meet any additional qualifications established by the POST Council
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires a valid Montana Driver's License. Due to occupational requirements, applicants must successfully pass a review of their driving record and a criminal history check to qualify for consideration for this position. Upon offer of employment, applicants must pass a background investigation and physical examination. Successfully pass and maintain departmental standards for firearms qualification - transport and court support staff only.
Physical/Environmental Demands
The employee may be exposed to potentially dangerous situations. Requires adjusting to changing shifts and exposure to a stressful environment. Must be able to physically respond in the event of an emergency to provide for the safety and welfare of co-workers and the inmate population. Requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing and frequent walking on concrete surfaces and occasional pulling or dragging of weight of up to 150 pounds. May be required to drive a passenger van to transport inmates.

Public Employees Retirement System - Montana public employees of the state, university system, local governments and certain employees of school districts are covered by the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). New members to the PERS have an opportunity to choose between two retirement plan options: the Defined Benefit Plan or the Defined Contribution Plan.
Sheriffs' Retirement System (SRS) - A public pension plan for all Montana Sheriffs hired after July 1, 1974 and Detention Officers hired after July 1, 2005.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness- Working for Missoula County may qualify you to receive student loan forgiveness. Look to learn more and understand whether you may be eligible.
Supplemental Retirement Benefits are offered through Valic or Nationwide.
Sick Leave - Full-time employees accrue 7.38 hours per month and are eligible to use sick leave once you have been an employee for 90 days. The accrual is pro-rated for part-time employees.
Vacation Leave - Full-time employees accrue 9.24 hours per month and are eligible to use leave after continuous employment for a period of 6 full months. The accrual is pro-rated for part-time employees.
Holidays - The County observes eleven legal holidays in even numbered years and ten legal holidays in odd numbered years.
Paid Parental Leave (PPL)- In recognition of the importance of bonding and care of a newborn child or a child placed for adoption, Missoula County 6 continuous weeks of PPL to eligible full-time employees that have been with the county for 180 days. The hours are pro-rated for part-time employees.
