Principal Scientist- Scientific & Regulatory Affairs

The Principal Scientist provides regional scientific and regulatory expertise and leverages scientific networks to enable the development and execution of Mars Wrigley (MW) Scientific and Regulatory Affairs (SRA) strategy.

This position leads the regional development and execution of SRA strategy to manage critical contaminants, chemicals of concern and food contact material safety (FCM) and proactively identifies potential regulatory risks/opportunities, and takes action, as appropriate, to minimize or takes leadership to help the business navigate such risks/opportunities The role also supports creating a positive scientific and regulatory environment for our products in line with our business goals. In addition, this position also works on innovation and external projects to advance our sustainability agenda by evaluating new processes and materials against MW safety standards.

This position creates and coordinates aligned regulatory and scientific programs related to contaminants, and represents MW in key external organizations, to create a scientifically based regulatory environment.

What are we looking for?

  • Bachelors in toxicology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related scientific discipline.

  • 8 years minimum of working knowledge of food regulatory (food contact material compliance preferred) and additive/contaminant issues.

  • Preferred 10 years’ experience in regulatory & scientific affairs focused on ingredient issues management in food products and packaging and/or related product categories (such as food supplements, cosmetics) with proficiency in Regulatory Affairs and compliance.

  • Experience working with trade associations and government agencies to clarify and resolve regulatory matters is required.

  • Ability to travel 20%

  • Demonstrated track record of working successfully across functions to achieve shared goals; and proven ability to interact cross-functionally at all levels within the organization are required.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • The Principal Scientist develops and leads the development and execution of SRA strategy to manage critical contaminants, chemicals of concern and food contact material safety (FCM). The position applies knowledge in, chemistry, regulatory and scientific affairs, liaises closely with toxicology as well as leverages external networks to lead technical issues critical to MW.

  • Proactively monitors scientific and regulatory activities in the region in the area of food contact materials and food chemicals legislation; determines current and expected regulatory status of new materials; research interpretations regarding the safety and acceptability of products and ingredients, works internally (including with cross-segment Mars partners) and externally to address and influence proposed regulations to propose new opportunities or preserve Mars’ freedom to operate.

  • Develops and executes the external scientific and regulatory influencing strategy related to food contact materials and food chemicals legislation in the region. Works with internal partners to understand priorities and impacts of developing legislation and aligns appropriate external positions.

  • Accountable for leading internal cross-functional communities of practice or technical working groups in order to provide strategic scientific and regulatory guidance and clear recommendations to relevant internal partners on existing and emerging scientific and regulatory issues for packaging materials and food chemical legislation matters of interest to the Company.

  • Influences internal and external strategy development in the science and regulatory area of packaging material and food chemicals regulations via literature reviews, conference attendance, and participation in professional association activities so that the potential impact to MW can be examined and addressed or opportunities can be generated and materialised and communicates relevant information to stakeholders.

  • Accountable and responsible for ensuring that standards, systems and processes are in place to ensure newly developed or revised packaging materials, supply chain resilience and seasonal promotions meet regulatory requirements so that they can be marketed in North America.
