Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented, energetic, ambitious, and creative individual to help shape the future of a discovery-oriented biomedical research laboratory, new to the Mayo Clinic. We are searching for an individual who will take the lead in coordinating overall operations for this large and growing laboratory that recently relocated to the Mayo Clinic from the University of Pittsburgh. The lab is jointly directed by two senior Principal Investigators who are newly recruited members of the Mayo Clinic Staff:

Dr. Peter Lucas - Vice Chair of Research, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology

Dr. Linda McAllister-Lucas - Enterprise Deputy Director, Pediatric Cancer Programs, Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center

The successful candidate will serve as the overall manager of the laboratory and will oversee, mentor and train technologists, students (including undergraduate, medical and PhD), residents and fellows. Major areas of responsibility will be to:

  • Oversee complex lab operations involving various areas of biomedical research, with a focus on cancer biology.
  • Prepare and maintain regulatory documentation including, but not limited to, chemical inventories, biosafety and experimental animal protocols, IRBs.
  • Work with regulatory offices to make certain that the laboratory group is compliant and individuals within the laboratory are appropriately trained.
  • Maintain equipment and reagents, including the creation and maintenance of a log of reagents, cell lines, plasmids, and other equipment.
  • Interface with vendors to facilitate capital equipment purchases. Coordinate service contracts for equipment.
  • Coordinate purchase of reagents and other consumables.
  • Manage the breeding / maintenance of experimental mice.
  • Develop and design research methods and protocols; plan and implement laboratory experiments.
  • Maintain or acquire deep expertise in multiple cancer biology related laboratory techniques including, but not limited to, the development and analysis of mouse models of cancer, varied cell phenotype assays, tissue processing for histology, confocal microscopy, tissue culture, transfections/transductions, molecular biology/cloning, RT-PCR, SDS-PAGE, western blotting, and flow cytometry analysis. Maintain or acquire expertise in bioinformatic analyses. Participate actively in performing experiments using these and other techniques.
  • Regularly confer with laboratory Principal Investigators regarding all aspects of the position. Maintain quality control standards for the facility to ensure accuracy and precision of experimentation. Oversee the deployment and maintenance of laboratory software including electronic notebooks and supply chain management software.
  • Assist/collaborate with preparation of figures and tables for manuscripts and grants, as well as preparation of materials and methods for manuscripts and grants.

Qualifications

Requires master's degree in biology, chemistry, other relevant science with 8 years of research laboratory experience, or a Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of relevant laboratory experience. Requires first authorship of a scientific publication as well as one presentation at a national level, or equivalent pre-requisite experience in a setting where this was not possible. Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, or other relevant science preferred. Must have demonstrated abilities in experimental procedures, statistical analysis techniques, development of experiments, and troubleshooting in a laboratory setting. Requires ability to work independently, including experience providing independent oversight of research project(s). Must be able to work with a variety of people at all levels both within and outside of the institution.
