The Position

Description:

Safety Assessment (SA) is a mission-critical department in gRED/ Development  Sciences (DevSci) with accountability for the nonclinical Safety Assessment of the  entire gRED portfolio from early research, through all phases of clinical development up to post-approval support. As part of a dynamic organizational Roche environment and changing gRED portfolio, SA is continuously developing and transforming their organizational/ scientific strategy and culture to adapt to future evolving scientific  and business needs. This process requires continuous monitoring of the internal landscape and emerging external industry trends within and beyond the life science industry, creating impactful relationships across the organization to leverage the full capabilities of the entire Roche organization, the evaluation and potential adaptation of innovative scientific and technology concepts and organizational approaches, and an effective change management throughout SA and with key organizational stakeholders. 

The Principal Business Manager will partner with the Vice President of Safety Assessment and SA Senior Leadership Team (SALT) to provide high quality functional business management support, continuously identify opportunities to improve business processes and infrastructure, and drive initiatives to improve business and operational capabilities. This role will be a standing member of SALT and will ensure overall functional business continuity and support key SA strategy initiatives. The capability to lead across diverse groups, creating an environment of belonging, inclusion, and diversity is essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and facilitate leadership team meetings, department-wide business meetings, and external/joint collaboration meetings, includisng taking the lead in meeting agenda preparation, organization of meetings, generation of minutes, and archival; 

  • Provide project management expertise to SALT on SA business needs, including but not limited to annual goal setting,  promotion and headcount planning, budget tracking and planning;

  • Lead internal and external communications: generate polished and concise communication for departmental communications and guidance;

  • Lead and/or support initiatives to ensure that deliverables are achieved in a timely manner and with a standard of excellence.  Take part in managing department goals, moving them forward by guiding/facilitating projects from conception through to their finish and rollout;

    • Play a key role in the development and management of project timelines, tasks, priorities, risks, and resources to create and maintain plans;

  • Create/update and manage dashboards for business initiatives, goals, and technology evaluations to better facilitate transparency of activities across the respective departments and how resources are utilized;

  • Proactively identify, recommend, and implement innovative solutions for improving department function;

  • Review/revise/create sustainable business processes to solve complex challenges and define clear roles and responsibilities; 

  • Where applicable, represent the department externally on cross-functional teams; 

  • Proactively communicate issues/concerns and provide transparency with key stakeholders and functional leadership teams;

  • Identify and escalate risks and issues related to specific projects across the department;

  • Apply project management expertise for joint cross-functional departmental events. Partner with the head of the departments to evaluate short- and long-term business needs, proactively identifying risks and facilitating solutions as they pertain to resource allocation, budget management;

  • Actively engage in the DevSci Business Manager Community to partner with fellow functional Business Managers on cross-functional initiatives.


 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: 

The ideal candidate will satisfy many of the following requirements: 

  • A Bachelor’s or Master's in life sciences and Project Management experience is highly desired, MBA is a plus.

  • At minimum 8 years of experience (6 years for MS) in applying project management principles and processes.  Prior experience working in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry is a plus.

  • Excellent communication (both written and oral), influencing, negotiation, and facilitation skills, and the ability to work well with others in a proactive, positive, and constructive manner.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with customers and key stakeholders; ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to function effectively with limited direction

  • Be self-driven and take on responsibilities as they arise to drive results.

  • A high degree of flexibility, adapting to the organization’s priorities in a fast-paced environment, and in dealing with ambiguity.

  • Well organized and efficient; results and detail-oriented; self-motivated and self-driven

  • Proficient with project management practices, tools, and methodology with specific experience in drug development a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority

  • Ability to see the interrelationship of a project across "the big picture" and understand its dependency on other projects/activities as required

  • Strong record of managing multiple stakeholders, & a desire to deliver service excellence

  • Ability to translate strategy into action and the ability to consolidate complex information into actionable insights.

  • Use sound decision-making principles and follow up on agreements and actions.

  • Able to prioritize team activities and influence strategy

  • Experience in working with scientific or highly technical clients in a global setting

  • Advanced competence in the use of standard office software (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google suits, in addition, Spotfire, gSites, and experiences with other business management software/platforms are a plus

  • Business or project management coursework or additional supportive training desired (e.g. PMP, Six Sigma, Lean, Design Thinking, Agile methodology, etc)

  • Knowledge of and experience with change management practices

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $144,000- $267,400.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
