Job description

iota Biosciences, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Astellas Pharma US, is a medical device company pioneering bioelectronic solutions across a range of medical therapies and diagnostics. Bioelectronic medical implants are the start of an entirely new form of medicine, treating chronic diseases through non-pharmaceutical mechanisms not previously accessible to clinicians.

iota Biosciences, Inc. was acquired by Astellas Pharma US in November 2020. Astellas Pharma US, Inc. is an affiliate of Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma Inc., a top 20 global pharmaceutical research company. Astellas is committed to turning innovative science into medical solutions that bring value and hope to patients and their families. iota’s core proprietary technology stack leverages ultrasonic energy to communicate with and power custom implantable devices, enabling completely new clinical approaches to treating diseases. At iota Biosciences you will be given the opportunity to substantially influence the design and success of these pioneering Class III medical implants, as the company expands the reach of its novel technology while bringing new solutions to the clinic.

We are seeking a highly accomplished and visionary Principal Biomedical Engineer to spearhead product innovation, feasibility testing, and early-stage product development, with a specialized focus on bladder neuromodulation. As a Principal Biomedical Engineer, you will help lead multi-disciplinary teams in developing cutting-edge medical devices, performing exploratory product innovation and vision execution activities, and helping to formulate iota’s long term technology vision and strategy.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and direct the early-stage medical device innovation activities, with a primary focus on advancing bladder neuromodulation technologies
  • Conduct comprehensive feasibility studies and assess the technological and clinical viability of new product concepts

  • Design, prototype, and iterate on novel solutions, ensuring alignment with regulatory standards and industry best practices
  • Utilize engineering expertise to address complex challenges related to materials, electronics, system integration, and device-tissue interactions
  • Stay at the forefront of industry trends, emerging technologies, and scientific advancements to shape product innovation strategies
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with external partners, key opinion leaders, and research collaborators
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior engineers and cross-functional team members

Key Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related technical field, PhD preferred.
  • At least 8 years of extensive experience in leading research and innovation initiatives, particularly in the field of active implantable medical devices
  • Demonstrated expertise in bladder neuromodulation technologies (e.g., sacral nerve stimulation, pudendal nerve stimulation, etc.) and a track record of successful product development
  • Proven ability to conduct and oversee complex feasibility studies and translate concepts into viable products
  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards governing medical device development
  • Proficiency in relevant software tools for advanced design, analysis, and documentation
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and project management skills
  • Proven ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced, and innovative environment
