The role of the Prevention Specialist II will be to catalyze and support community efforts towards the reduction of youth substance use at a county level.
Strong candidates will exhibit a talent for relationship building, grants implementation, coordination of multiple projects at a time, and exceptional communication skills.
The Prevention Specialist II will work to promote inclusion, community ownership, and develop leadership in order to implement creative solutions for social change that are grounded in prevention science.
Key areas of responsibility for our Prevention Specialist includes:
- Community Needs: Help identify community needs, assets, and resources.
- Community Engagement: Engage with a team of organization and community representatives to develop an understanding of child and youth need systems in the context of family, school and community functioning.
- Facilitation and Community Education: Deliver evidenced based prevention programming for families and youth in schools and other community locations.
- System Enhancement: Enhance existing and integrate new youth services, while working closely with youth serving agencies, schools, and organizations.
- Youth Advocacy: Connecting with formal and informal youth networks via in person, social media, and virtual environments.
- Coalition Support: working within community coalitions, including facilitating community meetings, providing information dissemination on substance misuse and related topics.
- Evaluation: Support evaluation efforts and process changes to improve effectiveness.
Requirements
- Qualified Substance Abuse Professional as defined by: (a) a graduate of a college or university with a Masters degree in a human service field and has one year of full-time, post-graduate degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention; or (b) a graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a human service field and has two years of full-time, post-bachelor's degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention; or (c) a graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a field other than human services and has four years of full-time, post bachelor's degree accumulated supervised experience in substance abuse prevention; or (d) a substance abuse prevention professional who is certified as a Certified Substance Abuse Prevention Consultant (CSAPC) by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board and meets the above requirements as a QSAPP. Must apply for CSAPC certification within 3 months of employment and become certified within five (5) years of employment. Other job requirements include:
- Valid driver's license including personal vehicle insurance coverage if applicable. Emotional stability, maturity, warmth, openness and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
- Minimum two (2) years continuous sobriety and/or recovery from mood altering drugs. Recovery from alcohol or other drug(s) must be maintained at all times, with active involvement in recovery if applicable. Commitment to best practices and implementation of evidence based programs, policies, and practices. Ability to perform duties physically and mentally without harm to self or others.
- Knowledge and experience with State substance abuse/mental health systems, particularly prevention.
- Knowledge of prevention science, local community resource and service systems functioning, and strategies leading to the propagation of prevention and health promotion services and values.
- Knowledge of child/adolescent developmental dynamics in the context of family systems functioning. Ability to effectively deliver prevention programs to youth and adults and public presentations Ability to effectively engage diverse populations.
