Legal Intake Specialist

The Land Loss Prevention Project was founded in 1982 by the North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers to curtail epidemic losses of Black owned land in North Carolina. Land Loss Prevention Project was incorporated in the state of North Carolina in 1983. The organization broadened its mission in 1993 to provide legal support and assistance to all financially distressed and limited resource farmers and landowners in North Carolina.

Land Loss Prevention Project’s advocacy for financially distressed and limited resource farmers involves action in three separate arenas: litigation, public policy, and promoting sustainable agriculture and environment.

The Part-time Legal Intake Specialist is responsible for efficiently handling and processing calls, web-based inquiries, and referrals related to intake; conducting potential client interviews; and creating and maintaining related records.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform basic office functions including answering and directing phone calls, retrieving, tracking, distributing mail.
• Interviewing prospective clients to become familiar with their concerns, scope of legal services needed and screening for income eligibility.
• Capturing in written form the preliminary interview with the prospective clients.
• Obtaining necessary information for and performing conflict check.
• Interfacing with Program Manager and Deputy Director for determination of internal assignment or referral.
• Entering client information into recordkeeping systems.
• Creating new client physical files for distribution to attorney team.
• Processing closed physical files for maintenance and storage and maintaining an established filing system.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Commitment to assisting underserved farmers, homeowners, and landowners.
• Two years of administrative experience or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
• Excellent organizational skills and multitasking ability to move efficiently from one inquiry to another.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to establish rapport during potential client interviews.
• Ability to work in-person (at least three days per week) as well as remotely.
• Familiarity with and working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access) and ability to navigate case management software.
• Strong typing skills.
• Must be able to lift 30 pounds; sit for long periods of time; file documents; and stand, stoop, bend, reach overhead, and type on the computer keyboard.
