Job description

Part of the Site Team, the Teacher Aide assists the Site Coordinator in implementing the Keiki Steps program of instruction in a family-child interactive learning preschool classroom, creating an environment that is conducive to learning. As a key member of the team, the position will help to ensure that the materials and activities in the classroom adhere to the philosophy, goals and objectives as outlined in Keiki Steps core curriculum and the institution's mission.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide educational support to children and their parents/caregivers within multiple modalities including in-person and/or distance learning.
  • Aide and assist with team kuleana in the implementation of classroom activities, student and parent assessments, and daily classroom functions and operations.
  • Assist and support team members with team kuleana, including but not limited to site set up, execution of programming, and site cleanup.
  • Maintain current certifications including but not limited to CDA (until AA in ECE is earned), First/Aid, CPR.
  • Assist in creating an engaging Keiki Steps preschool classroom environment.
  • Assist in the implementation of a developmentally appropriate curriculum that is rooted in the Hawaiian culture.
  • Support the daily use of Hawaiian cultural activities, practices, and language.
  • Follow ethical and professional practices in working with children, children's records, parents, caregivers, and colleagues.
  • Work cooperatively with community partners.
  • Assist with maintaining program files as assigned by leadership and in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Assist with providing progress reports and accurate monthly documentation for site kuleana as assigned and expected by leadership.
  • Meet deadlines for all monthly kuleana submissions and report deadlines.
  • Participate in at least five community events per school year and engage in ongoing recruitment for the program.
  • Attend and actively participate in meetings at the program and site team on a regular basis as established by leadership.
  • Assist in screening and evaluating of children, their families and caregivers in program.
  • Participate in ECE coursework each semester and actively engage to meet the minimal educational requirements.
  • Actively participate and adhere to Ka Lama program expectations.
  • Use effective oral and written expression.
  • Perform Site Coordinator duties in their absence.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:
Level 1: High school diploma and at least 1 year experience of working with children ages 0-5.
Level 2: CDA credentials OR High school diploma and 3+ years preschool classroom
Level 3: Associates in Early Childhood Education or related field.
Level 4: Bachelors in Early Childhood Education or related field.
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Ability to organize, coordinate, plan and implement a comprehensive Keiki Steps instructional program for children and their families or caregivers.
  • Knowledge of early care and education as well as other family support services and resources available in the community.
  • Willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Proficiency required in oral and written communication, interpersonal relations.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekend
  • Ability to analyze problems, develop effective solutions and resolve problems within a Hawaiian cultural context.
  • Willingness to integrate new practices and skills into work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in order to interact with internal and external individuals, groups, organizations, and community agencies.
  • Proficiency in technological applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Zoom, Google Suite, Workforce Automatic Data Processing (ADP).
