QUALIFICATIONS: Meet State day care licensing requirements for teacher. BA in child development or early childhood education and 6 months experience or BA Elementary Education and six months experience with preschool age plus 6 credits ECE or AS degree and ECE credential and one year experience or CDA and one-year experience.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teachers have a responsibility to plan and implement an educational program in concert with Seagull Schools educational goals, objectives, and beliefs. They are directly responsible to the Director or Teacher in Charge.

CLASSROOM:

  • See that the assigned classroom is maintained; shelves and floor reasonably free of dust, dirt, paper, and food particles
  • Keep a well-organized, orderly environment with materials and equipment easily accessible to the children
  • See that all materials and equipment are properly used by children and adults
  • Maintain materials and equipment in repair; inform the Director of need for repairs in writing
  • Suggest needed educational materials, supplies and equipment in writing to the Director or Teacher in Charge

CHILDCARE:

  • Oversee the health, welfare and safety of the children in assigned group
  • Observe daily health check
  • Take appropriate action in case of child’s illness or accident; notifying parents, keeping accurate injury records on accident report forms
  • See that the assigned group is always supervised adequately, NEVER left alone
  • Practice fire drills and being aware of escape routes and procedures
  • Report strangers on the premises to the Director or Teacher in Charge
  • Supervise children in the bathroom
  • Supervise breakfast, lunch, and snack time activities of the children as a group. These are times together, time for socializing and enjoying each other’s company. Teachers and aides should sit down with the children to eat
  • Supervise the children on the playground. See that the staff is spaced for maximum coverage of the play area for the safety of the children. Avoid having adult supervisors stand or sit together in clusters

INSTRUCTION:

  • Greet each child and parent as they arrive daily
  • Teach strategies, collect materials and implement appropriate curriculum for the age level of the group
  • Create supporting schedules and positive learning environments appropriate to the age level of the children in the group
  • Provide for alternating periods of indoor and outdoor play
  • Provide for alternating periods of quiet and active play
  • Provide for balance of self-selected and teacher-directed learning experiences
  • Keep a weekly plan book of daily schedule and curriculum programs, skills activities; goals appropriate for the age level of the children in the group, submit them for review on a regular basis
  • Train, constructively evaluate of assistant teacher, teacher’s aides, work-study students and volunteers
  • Maintain a clear plan for substitute teachers in case of absence
  • Follow the child guidance system of the schools, using positive discipline techniques
  • Maintain NAEYC accreditation standards

COMMUNICATION:

  • Prepare all required reports pertaining to the group of children and individuals
  • Keep progress reports on the individual children
  • Hold parent conferences and submit twice yearly progress reports, one copy to parents, one copy to the child’s record file
  • Telephone parent when child is absent more than three days

STAFF:

  • Report to work on time, signing in and out and inform the Director or Teacher in Charge of absences in advance
  • Maintain a valid first aid certificate and CPR certificate
  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Maintain an information file/folder for staff reference
  • Be a role model for assistants and aides

OTHER:

  • Participate in parent education program when required by the Director or Teacher in Charge
  • Keep abreast of trends in early childhood education through additional college-work, attend professional workshops, maintain membership in professional organizations (NAEYC) and read professional literature
  • Other duties as assigned by Director or Teacher in Charge
  • Assisting in fund raising activities
