Responsibilities
- Prepare and implement Reggio Emilia inspired curriculum based on the observations and interests of the children, through projects and documentation
- Prepare and implement Mandarin language and Chinese culture Immersion curriculum with the goals of helping children develop verbal proficiency and love, knowledge, and appreciation of the Chinese culture.
- Set up and maintain classroom and outdoor environment conducive to learning
- Ensure that environment, materials, and equipment are safe, clean, clutter-free, visually aesthetic, challenging, functional, anti-bias, and developmentally appropriate
- Utilize prep time to prepare for upcoming activities, participate in team meetings and to create documentation
- Plan and organize curriculum and activities to meet the physical, social, intellectual, and emotional needs of each child and to provide the children with a stimulating, joyous and engaging learning experience
- Engage with the students in physical play in different environments
- Work with the team to create daily open-ended activities which encourage questioning, problem solving, language, creativity, and concept forming in young children.
- Always maintain visual and auditory supervision of children to ensure their safety in the classroom, on the playground, and on field trips
- Record observations of each child throughout all domains of development and conduct developmental assessments for each child in cooperation with other team members.
- Support children to build critical and creative thinking skills through inquiry, observation, and experimentation
- Support children’s social and emotional growth
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure essential childcare tasks are accomplished, for example: help with meals, washing hands, cleaning up after playing and eating, changing clothes, assist with children’s bathroom breaks and/or changing diapers, set up and clean up nap cots
- Provide hands-on, visual, and auditory supervision and intervene in case of injury, conflict or other situations that may pose a risk to the safety of any student.
- Communicate in a positive, supportive, and professional manner with parents (written and verbal) on an ongoing basis and provide detailed assessments of child’s development at parent conferences
- Attend and participate in all staff meetings, team meetings, and other meetings as required
- Prepare professional quality written reports for each child to include parent conference reports, injury reports, and kindergarten recommendations when applicable
- Work to increase skills and knowledge in early childhood education, the Reggio Emilia Approach and Mandarin Immersion practices
- Perform other duties as necessary and as assigned by Head of Preschool to ensure program compliance and quality services to children and parents.
- Joy in working with young children and assisting their progress
- Minimum of 6 months teaching experience with preschool age children in the US.
- A minimum of 12 units (with a BA) or 24 units in Early Childhood Education units from an accredited college or university in courses designated in the following areas: Child Development, Child, Family and Community, ECE Curriculum, ECE Principles
- Bilingual and biliterate in Mandarin Chinese and English with native Mandarin Chinese proficiency, including ability to teach simplified and pinyin writing systems.
- Bachelor’s Degree in early childhood education or related field (master’s degree a plus)
- Knowledge of Reggio Emilia preferred
- Strong knowledge of child development and a passion to grow in the field
- Commitment to reflective practice, and an openness to continual professional development
- Proficiency of verbal and written communication
- Ability to lift and carry children up to 50lbs
- Able to work legally in the US and pass Livescan background check permitting employment in a school / childcare facility

The PKS preschool curriculum is Reggio Emilia- inspired in preschool; project-based and interdisciplinary; elementary Units of Exploration integrate math, science, social studies, art, drama, and movement around overarching topics of inquiry in English and Chinese, contextualizing all learning through a real-world lens. Critical to this approach is hands-on, experiential instruction. As such, learning often takes place outside of the classroom.
Compensation
PKS offers a competitive compensation package the full-time salary range for applicants is $50,270 to $104,084 per year. Our teachers' base salaries are set according to years of experience and degrees earned. Full health, dental and vision benefits are available.
