JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective

The Magellan International School (Colegio Internacional Magallanes), in Austin, Texas, is seeking a Physical Education Teacher for the Preschool and Lower Primary School (Kinder - 2nd Grades). This individual will instruct Physical Education (PE) activities, and will provide PE information and serve as a resource to others. This position will achieve defined objectives by planning, evaluating, developing, implementing and maintaining services in compliance with established guidelines.

Essential Functions

• Designs, plans, and implements physical education lessons based on elements of the IB Primary Years Programme
• Measures the essential elements of the Primary Years Programme using a range of assessment strategies
• Ensures that the physical education environment is clean, safe and constructive for all students
• Works collaboratively with the Upper Primary and Middle School Physical Education Teacher
• Effectively manages students' behavior in class
• Assists in planning the annual Field Day across all school levels

Students

• Promotes high standards and expectations for all students for academic performance and responsibility for behavior
• Serves as a role model for students, dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the education profession
• Ensures that the instructional programs engage the learner in tasks that require analytical and critical thinking, problem solving and creativity,
• Addresses the range of skills and developmental needs found in the classroom
• Encourages students to define individual goals
• Maintains a safe and creative environment for their students

Faculty

• Supports teachers and co-workers
• Attends all staff/ faculty meetings
• Meets with the Primary Years Programme Coordinator to review curriculum plans and activities and evaluate program's effectiveness

Administration

• Maintains records on each child's progress and development
• Keeps up-to-date records of attendance, curriculum, assessment tasks in Managebac
• Carries out supervision at break times, lunch times, and other times as required
• Prepares documentation for IB external assessment

Parents

• Communicates professionally and effectively to parents about student progress
• Conducts individual parent conferences at the end of each term
• Establishes a positive relationship with each student's family
• Presents presentations to parents as needed
• Attends parent meetings when required
• Communicates and collaborates with parents of high needs students

Internal Community

• Participates in Fundraising and Marketing efforts to support the growth of our non-profit, independent school

External Community

• Curates local community offerings and communicates opportunities to school community
• Promotes the Magellan International School Mission
• Creates and maintains connections with relevant community resources

Required Education and Experience

1. Bachelor's Degree (Degree in Kinesiology or Sports Management preferred)
2. Experience and/or training in PYP
3. Ability to teach diverse students with varied athletic interests and different physical abilities
4. Dedication to healthy lifestyles, with an understanding of physiology, nutrition and metabolism
5. A minimum of three years' experience in working with elementary and/or preschool students
6. Experience with authentic assessment practices
7. Demonstrate experience as an effective coach
8. Demonstrate excellent leadership and organizational skills
9. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment
10. Ability to create a stimulating classroom environment
11. Ability to utilize the local context and environment to enhance learning
12. Ability to work with parents

Work Environment

This job operates in a classroom environment, and outdoors. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. This role requires the ability to interact with multiple children at a time, ability to lift children and heavy objects on a routine bases (up to 40 lbs) and have the ability to bend and sit on the floor throughout the day.
