Preparator

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for two Preparators in the Collection Management and Exhibition Registration Department to install works of art, including loan works and collection works and to install labels, signage, photo-panels, pedestals, vitrines, and related exhibition furnishings involving installations on and off Museum premises at the request of the curatorial department or management. These positions will work in the Museum's warehouse located in Queens, New York.

Additional responsibilities include:

• Wraps, packs, assembles, and dismantles works of art and other materials necessary to the above process. Unframes specified works of art based upon past practice.
• Installs hardware and other necessary attachments to facilitate the installation, storage, or shipping of works of art, including modifying the backings of paintings, assembling or disassembling sculptural objects, and properly mounting works of art into crates and travel frames. Fabricates custom hanging devices as needed.
• Maintains proper and uniform records on the movement and storage of works of art.
• Installs, maintains, and properly cares for exhibition and collection works and the furnishings used in their display or storage.
• Operates, after proper training, any and all mechanical devices used to install, lift, or move works of art or material or furnishing necessary for collection storage or exhibition use.
• Loads and offloads deliveries of works of art and related exhibition or collection materials.
• Transports works of art and related materials to galleries, other departments, or any other site.
• Cleans and maintains preparatory work and storage areas.
• Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
  
  

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree and three or more years experience in museum or gallery installation and art handling or equivalent.
• Capacity to work on both individual, unsupervised projects and as a member of a crew in which teamwork is essential.
• Ability to exercise conscientious use of time and timely completion of assignments and attention to detail.
• High regard for the level of quality in completing specific requirements.

• MoMA participates in the TSA’s Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program. Therefore, if hired, individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security in order to participate.

Reports to: Senior Manager, Art Handling and Preparation

Salary: The salary for this position is $40.48 per hour for a 40-hour work week.
