Job Description:

Idaho Power Company (IPC) — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for Pre-Apprentice Station Technicians to join our T&D Construction crews. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. We’re working toward our goal of providing 100% clean energy by 2045, and our work plays a critical role in our customers’ lives and in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon.

It is our goal to hire the best qualified Apprentice Station Technicians available. To meet this objective, IPC will hire Apprentices from an internal pool of Pre-Apprentices. The Pre-Apprentices selected for hire will have demonstrated the technical and behavioral competencies necessary to be a productive and successful Station Technician at IPC.

Our Stations Construction Crews are divided into 5 disciplines – Structural, Control, Mobile Apparatus, Combo, and the Electrical Shop:

Structural – They are responsible for installing substation and power plant grids, foundations, structures, breakers, transformers, buss, high and low voltage cables, and other apparatus.

Control – They are responsible for installing, commissioning, and troubleshooting substation and power plant control systems. These include system monitoring equipment, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) remote terminal units (RTUs), remedial action schemes (RAS), and protective relay, control, and communication systems.

Mobile Apparatus – They are responsible for hauling, operating, maintaining, testing, installing, and repairing IPC’s fleet of mobile apparatus. They assemble, disassemble, and move all new and used transformers in IPC’s system.

Combo – This crew is generally made up of both Structural and Control Technicians.

Electrical Shop – They are responsible for the assembly and testing of substation protection, communication, and control systems and supporting equipment. These systems include protective relaying, control, SCADA, metering, digital fault and sequence of event recorders and remote terminal unit (RTU) configurations.

What does a Pre-Apprentice Station Technician do for us?

This is a training position, designed to prepare future Station Technicians for work in a crew-based environment. These individuals will learn how to install Station related structural, control, and mobile apparatus equipment and assemblies. Under direct supervision, they will assist the Station Technicians to install and assemble Stations related structural assemblies, control systems, and power transformers. They complete assigned tasks, including all aspects of the Station Construction given adequate direction and oversight. Pre-Apprentices must demonstrate the aptitude to be considered for a Station Technician Apprentice position. Aptitude will be demonstrated through on-the-job evaluations, a skills assessment, and performance evaluations. If aptitude is not sufficiently demonstrated, termination of employment may occur. If an Apprentice position is bid, the successful Pre-Apprentice will receive a pay increase ($38.96/hr.).
