Power Systems Engineer Team Lead

Position Description:

Designs, modifies, develops, writes and implements software-programming for generator control switchgear applications.  Utilizes instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.  Collaborates with Aftermarket Engineering team to test, revise and implement future instructions and/or guidelines for job completion.  Provides technical leadership, training, evaluation and escalation for a team of Power Systems Engineers.  Works under general supervision of the Power Systems Engineering Manager and Aftermarket Engineering Manager.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify retrofit opportunities, scope projects, and support proposal creation via Dealer and Factory teams
  • Perform technical risk management for field performance of assigned projects.
  • Convert legacy PLC projects to new platforms and validate for accuracy.
  • Execute and support design, test, manufacture and commissioning of low and medium voltage switchgear controls retrofits for systems that control multiple generators which parallel to one or more utility sources.
  • Use of CAD software to complete majority of project drawing updates prior to submission to CAD designers.
  • When necessary, provide direction to CAD designers to create wiring and assembly drawings for generator paralleling controls.
  • Utilize templates, modify PLC programs or create PLC programs for control of generator paralleling switchgear.
  • Modify template HMI programs to coincide with project-specific PLC programs.
  • Works with Engineering teams to assist with development of custom and/or future template PLC programming.
  • Provide Engineering/Technical support to Product Support Sales Group.
  • Submit daily project reports and expenses in a timely manner.
  • Assists the Product Support Center help desk to resolve customer issues that cannot be handled locally.
  • Provides technical support to, and acts as a technical escalation point for, Power Systems and HMI Engineers assigned to his/her team for technical and project-related issues.
  • Coaches and develops team members’ technical capabilities.
  • Provides input to Aftermarket Engineering Manager for performance reviews of assigned team members.
  • Participates in performance reviews of assigned team members.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience in dealing with multiple disciplines such as contractors, consultants, engineers, end users, etc.
  • Working knowledge of the following:
    • Installation, troubleshooting, and design of switchgear, ATS, and generator systems.
    • Reading schematics and blueprints for power control and automation at a Power Systems level
    • Installation, troubleshooting, design and programming of automated control systems using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI’s), PC controls, and distributed processing.

  • Position requires travel, typically between 25 - 40%, to support projects or staff.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Experience leading technical teams.

Education and Work Experience:

Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET) with 4 years of experience, or minimum of 6 years equivalent work experience.
