The City of Pasadena Water and Power Department, Power Supply division, is seeking to fill a Power Plant Mechanic position. A Power Plant Mechanic performs journey-level skilled maintenance and repair of Power Plant and hydro-electric plant power generation units and auxiliary equipment. Work assigned requires technical knowledge of the functions applicable to an area of assignment and the ability to solve routine to difficult problems. Employees in this class typically report to a Power Plant Mechanic Crew Supervisor and may provide on-the-job training to Power Plant Apprentices. Power Plant Mechanic is distinguished from Senior Power Plant Mechanic in that an incumbent in the latter class performs more complex maintenance and repairs and may serve as the working lead person on a shift. IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be experienced in performing skilled preventive maintenance and repair tasks on power- generation units and auxiliary equipment. The incumbent will be familiar with a variety of equipment in a Power Plant, with some of the equipment not common in the industry. The incumbent will possess the learning agility to understand equipment with which they have no previous knowledge and subsequently become skilled at performing maintenance on the unfamiliar equipment.

COMPETENCIES
The following list represents the core competencies needed for success in this position.
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and at least four years of progressively responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment and machinery, two years of which were at an apprentice level in a steam and combustion Power Plant under journey-level instruction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process will consist of any combination of training and experience evaluation, performance exam, interview panel, and department-level interviews. Probationary work period is one year.

There is currently one vacancy in the Power Supply Division of the Water and Power Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and comply with the City's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment.
Annual certification for CPR and First Aid.
Must possess and maintain a Forklift Operation Certificate.
Must possess and maintain a mobile elevating work platform, or boomlift certification within six months of appointment.
Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPER (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.
Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.

- Performs corrective and preventive maintenance and repairs on combustion turbines; removes and replaces engines from gas turbine compartment; inspects and replaces fuel nozzles, and other damaged parts and components on the jet engine and the balance of plant equipment.
- Aligns pump and motors; rebuilds valves and aligns equipment; repairs cooling towers, aligning and setting fan blades, overhauling gear boxes and installing motor bearings; performs routine inspections and troubleshooting of rotating equipment.
- Maintains and repairs hydroelectric plant and auxiliary equipment; replaces/re-bush wicket arms; removes main bearing head assembly and replaces packing; identifies shaft wear and internal issues.
- Welds and fabricates structural parts; installs and repairs steel, timber, concrete and other structural members.
- Operates mobile platform cranes, forklifts and does related rigging.
- Uses precision tools such as micrometers, calipers and borescope equipment; operates machine shop equipment, such as lathes, milling machine, hydraulic press, drill press and power hacksaw.
- Performs skilled hot work including but not limited to gas welding, electric welding, brazing, grinding, cutting and stress relieving in the repair and maintenance of electric-generating units and associated auxiliary systems and components.
- Reads and interprets blueprints and complex maintenance manuals; submits daily reports.
- May provide on-the-job training and oversee the work of a Power Plant Apprentice.
- The employee may be required to work on weekends and holidays as needed.
