Position Focus
Provides mechanical services to the University Power Plants to include the overhauling, repairing, and testing of high pressure boilers, steam and gas turbines, diesel engines, cooling tower, air compressors and a variety of other complex equipment and distribution systems.
Essential Duties
1. Overhauls, repairs and tests high‐pressure boilers, steam and gas turbines, diesels, cooling towers, air compressors, pumps and associated and auxiliary equipment. Inspects and repairs the steam, condensate, chilled water, city water and sewer systems throughout the outlying distribution system.2. Reads, understands, uses, and updates shop prints and specifications and refers to manufacturer’s manuals for servicing and installation of equipment and distribution systems.3. Determines the manpower and material requirements and the means and methods to be used in accomplishing work assignments and recommends changes.4. Prepares and paints surfaces and maintains cleanliness of work areas.5. Uses tools and test equipment of the trade.6. Maintains spare parts inventory and orders parts as required.7. Coordinates with Watch Engineer when locking and tagging plants systems.8. Performs related duties as required or assigned.9. Observes safety standards and practices.10. Observes and assists outside contractors for compliance with Yale standards.11. Trains new hires/transferees regarding proper maintenance and safety standards and practices.12. Employees in this classification are subject to emergency call back procedures twenty-four (24) hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility.13. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
1. Must have at least four (4) years of Power Plant Mechanic experience or equivalent.2. High School diploma or equivalent.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Ability to read, write and follow written and verbal instructions.
Required Licenses or Certifications
1. Must have a S2 license.2. Must hold valid Driver's License.3. OSHA 10 certificate.
Physical Requirements
1. Climb ladders and scaffolding in excess of twenty (20) feet and may ride and work from mechanical lifts. Walks on catwalks. 2. Frequent stooping, bending, kneeling and/or squatting. Sustained work on knees. Sustained overhead work. 3. Work in confined areas including crawl spaces. Work in all types of weather. Work in dusty and dirty areas. Work in extreme temperatures (indoors and out). 4. Move both arms and shoulders in full and extended motion as necessary while working with tools, equipment and materials. 5. Move, assemble, lift and carry equipment, tools and materials of up to 50 lbs. without assistance. This includes from floor or chest height (the reverse is also true).
