- Biochar technology for wastewater treatment/reuse, runoff water treatment, anaerobic digestion, greenhouse gas control, and other applications.
- Novel water treatment to remove various emerging contaminants and pathogens.
- Novel microbial and algal biofuels and bioproducts.
- Supervise technicians and undergraduates.
- Coordinate research activities with a large team of collaborators.
- Present data in scientific meetings.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication.

- A Ph.D. in environmental engineering/science, chemical engineering, biological engineering, agricultural engineering, biochemistry, and other relevant disciplines.
- Production and application of biochar for environmental, energy and agricultural processes.
- Bioremediation and phytoremediation.
- Production of biofuels and bioproducts from agricultural waste, microalgae, and other biomass.
- Treatment of emerging contaminants (such as antibiotics, algal toxins, PFAS) in water and soil.
- Analytical instruments (i.e., LC/MS, HPLC, GC, ICP, IC, XRD, SEM/EDX, XPS).
- Analysis of nutrients, antibiotics and microbial pathogens from soil, plant and water.
- Molecular techniques including qPCR and 16S microbial community analysis.
- Statistical analysis and design of experiment.
