Job description

The Dallas Morning News is seeking an experienced reporter to join our politics team and be a driving force in holding state government accountable, writing about the impact political leaders have on North Texas and digging into the way Texas politicians manage the trust voters have placed in them. This reporter will be Texas' leading authority on the most powerful people in Austin and across the state. Their emphasis will be on the governor, the lieutenant governor and the speaker of the House.

They'll also keep tabs on executive branch leaders such as the attorney general, and others with influence - from lobbyists to party leaders and high-powered donors. The Dallas Morning News' goal is to be the No. 1 regional newsroom in the U.S.

Achieving that goal demands we stay laser-focused on how politics in one of the most influential states in the country impacts the people who live here. We want to be first on stories that are important to North Texans. We also want deep, incisive stories on issues of vital importance - how our state is spending tax money, how politicians' decisions impact access to vital services such as health care, how they are managing key infrastructure such as the Texas electrical grid, how state leaders are preparing for massive growth that continues throughout Texas, and whether elected and appointed leaders are abusing their power.

Being successful in this role demands an appetite for breaking news before the capitol pack as well as ground-breaking accountability reporting. It also requires a track record of excellent news judgment, strong source development, public records reporting, data analysis and the ability to connect people to the issues that impact them.
