Job description

The Dallas Morning News seeks an experienced, highly motivated, and enterprising Political Reporter to join our Austin bureau. This is a chance to be part of a five-person team that is focused on covering Texas political stories that often have a national impact. Our team frequently breaks news out of Texas' capitol and then writes deeply sourced enterprise stories that show North Texas residents how events in Austin impact their daily lives.

In the past year, our Austin team: Broke an exclusive story about how Texas prison inmates were endangered because of a lack of air conditioning in state prisons during one of Texas' hottest summers ever. Consistently broke stories about Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's legal troubles, impeachment in the state House, and acquittal before the Texas Senate. Held Texas Child Protective Services officials accountable for failing to adequately care for children in the state's foster care system.

Shadowed Texas state troopers to produce a watchdog report that held the state accountable for how it is carrying out a $4 billion state program to patrol the border with Mexico. The ideal candidate should have deep experience covering politics, be hungry to break news, and long to write the best enterprise journalism in the state. You also need to be a pro at building and developing sources that can lead you to stories no one else can get.

Knowledge of Texas politics and Texas government is preferred, and experience covering Texas' complicated state government is a plus. This reporter will be based in our bureau across the street from the capitol building in Austin, one of Texas's fastest-growing cities and one of the most desirable places to live in the United States. Skills: Proficient in learning digital content management tools Use social media for newsgathering and audience development Basic photo editing Comfort with fast-paced incremental storytelling (e.g., producing social media updates, updating online stories) Basic data literacy and analysis and ability to build simple charts, graphs, and maps with in-house tools Demonstrated ability to gather, edit, and post basic video and audio Demonstrated ability to work remotely via smartphone or laptop computer Demonstrated ability to interpret audience analytics to inform newsgathering decisions Understanding of platforms and audiences and ability to compose stories appropriate to the platform of publication (e.g., voice, style, formatting, hyperlinks) Basic knowledge of SEO and social headline-writing techniques Use accepted newsroom tools for planning, authoring, communicating, etc. Collaborate effectively with team members and across newsroom teams Spanish language skills are a plus; written and oral fluency is required for Al Dia staff writers.
