Job Description

The NYC Mayor's Office administers all city services, public property, most public agencies, and enforces all city, state, and federal laws within New York City. The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Strategic Initiatives (DMSI) ensures that City government solves problems through holistic, accountable, and transparent means. With a focus on many of the administration’s top priorities – from creating opportunities for young people to strengthening the city’s civic infrastructure – the office works in partnership with stakeholders inside and outside of city government to develop, scale, coordinate, and deliver policies, plans and operations in an equitable and sustainable way.
The Deputy Mayor also oversees the following agencies and offices: the Department of Youth and Community Development, the Office of Food Policy, the Office of Non-Profit Services, the Office of Childcare and Early Childhood Education, the Center for Innovation through Data Intelligence, the Office of Youth Employment, the Children’s Cabinet, and the Commission on Gender Equity
Under the direction of the Senior Advisor team, the Policy Advisor will support the DMSI and perform the following functions, with a special focus on connecting, coordinating and implementing the various projects coming out of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Neighborhood Safety Action Plan:
  • Project Management – Assist in overseeing and monitoring projects, legislation, and policy initiatives to ensure that goals and timelines are met.
  • & Analysis – Assist other staff members in performing qualitative and quantitative research in connection with policy proposals, projects, and DMSI initiatives. Based on that analysis, this person will make recommendations to relevant staff members.
  • Agency Liaison – Serve as a liaison between agencies and the Office of the Deputy Mayor, to monitor projects and assist in handling day-to-day issues.
  • Internal/External Stakeholder Communication – Act as a liaison with stakeholders to communicate on behalf of the Office of the Mayor and the Office of the Deputy Mayor as needed. Create talking points and speeches as needed.
  • Interagency Coordination – Coordinate with agencies, boards, commissions, and organizations relevant to DMSI proposed initiatives, meet project goals and timelines, and review agency and

interagency work product. development or planning agencies.
  • General Support – As needed, a Policy and Project Management Advisor will prepare briefing memoranda, provide background research and information, coordinate meeting planning and assistance, and respond to correspondence from constituents or elected officials.

Minimum Qualifications


1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
