Performs intermediate skilled clerical and technical work ensuring the proper custody and disposition of evidence and property; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant.Maintaining custody and disposing of evidence and property; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

- Processes incoming evidence; verifies paperwork; assigns property control number; assigns location for storage; logs evidence in and out for court; retains chain of custody.
- Processes crime scenes by photographing, examining, and evaluating the crime scene to recover physical and DNA/biological evidence.
- Prepares written reports and illustrative materials in the documentation of crime scenes.
- Testifies in court.
- Processes court destruction orders.
- Processes, packs, and submits evidence to SBI and FBI for analysis; verifies proper submission of lab request forms before transport; makes corrections as needed.
- Attends, observes, and photographs autopsies; collects evidence as required.
- Corresponds with other law enforcement or public service jurisdictions; maintains records.
- Evaluates latent prints for identification/elimination purposes.
- Conducts research for dispositions; sends letters to owners for return; sends notice to officer when time limit has expired; works with non-profit groups.
- Maintains inventory and orders supplies, places order for the day-to-day function of the department.
- Issues uniforms; maintains inventory of on-hand uniforms; maintains paperwork on items issued and returned.
- Provides support for special events; provides preparedness for hurricanes.
- Maintains seized and impounded vehicles; conducts inventory and prepares monthly report.
- Enters a variety of information into the computer; processes incoming and outgoing paperwork; maintains logbooks.
- Prepares a variety of reports.
- Provides training on Property and Evidence related issues.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, natural/forensic science or related field and experience in police evidence and records preferred.
Special Requirements:
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
