Under general supervision performs work of considerable difficulty including general and specialized supervisory police work in field and office involving responsibility for supervision and assistance in the management of police patrol, traffic regulation, criminal investigation, fugitive transportation, and control in the field and the performance of related administrative duties at police headquarters; and performs other work as required.
Has charge of field police operations on an assigned shift or on special assignment; acts as officer-in-charge of a division in the absence of a superior; assigns and supervises work of subordinates assigned to details and patrol units; performs criminal and general investigations including homicide, robbery, rape, assault with deadly weapon, assault and battery, suicide, threats, mental illness complaints, and domestic complaints; prepares case investigation reports; testifies in court on technical and investigative matters; patrols in a radio car observing, supervising and instructing subordinate officers; responds to police, fire and accident calls; conducts or assists in complaint investigations; supervises officers on the fugitive detail; assigns work involving the receipt, handling, investigation, and servicing of criminal warrants; directs or participates in maintenance of related records; serves local and out-of-state criminal subpoenas; receives and controls bail monies; reviews traffic complaints issued by the attorney's office; prepares traffic control, vacation, and special assignment schedules; maintains varied files and controls covering work activities; conducts training sessions.
Training and Experience: Five years of police experience, including two years experience as a senior police officer or one year as a detective, or an equivalent combination of training and experience to perform the described duties, immediately preceding the examination. Must possess an Advanced P.O.S.T. Certificate.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of modern police enforcement procedures and techniques related to police administration, traffic regulations and control, and criminal investigation; comprehensive knowledge of the rules and regulations of the police department; comprehensive knowledge of pertinent federal and state laws and of City ordinances; comprehensive knowledge of the geography of the City, location of important buildings and places of suspect and criminal activity; good knowledge of recent developments, current literature, and sources of information regarding police enforcement methods and techniques; ability to prepare clear comprehensive written reports; ability to lead personnel and to command their respect; ability to analyze police situations rapidly and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with regard to hazards and circumstances; ability to speak effectively to the public.
Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a valid California driver's license; Advanced
P. O. S. T. Certificate.

HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.
SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
