Complete Application for Police Recruit: Start by filling out the application form provided by the police department. The application includes personal information, educational background, and other relevant details.
Written Exam: Applicants are required to take a written examination, which assesses personality and general knowledge.
Background Investigation: A thorough background investigation is conducted to assess an applicant's personal and work history. This investigation may include checking criminal records, employment history, references, and more. It also involves a polygraph examination (lie detector test) to verify the information provided.
Physical Fitness Exam: Applicants must undergo a physical fitness exam to ensure they meet the department's physical requirements. This may include tests of strength, endurance, and agility.
Psychological Test (Psychiatrist Interview): A psychological evaluation is conducted to assess the mental fitness and stability of applicants. This often includes an interview with a psychiatrist or psychologist to discuss an applicant's emotional and psychological well-being.
Complete Medical Exam Including Drug Screening: Applicants must undergo a comprehensive medical examination to assess their overall health and fitness for the job. This includes drug screening to ensure they are drug-free.
Academy: Once all the above steps are successfully completed and the applicant is deemed suitable for the role, they will attend our police academy. The academy provides comprehensive training in various aspects of law enforcement, including firearms training, legal procedures, physical fitness, and more. You are paid at an hourly rate with benefits while training out our academy.

Questions and Answers!
Q: Do I have to have police experience to become a Police Recruit?
A: No. The Dayton Police Department runs its own state certification academy. We pay you an hourly rate with benefits to train at our academy. Our academy is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, off evenings, weekends, and city-observed holidays. Recruits who successfully complete the academy certification requirements are promoted to full-time Dayton Police Officers upon graduating from the academy.
Q: Do I have to live at the academy?
A: No. Recruits train at the academy during the day and return to their own lives each evening and are off on weekends and city-observed holidays.
Q: Do I have to pay to attend the academy?
A: No. In fact, Dayton PD pays its Police Recruits as full-time employees, including benefits.
Q: Will I have to buy a lot of equipment?
A: No. We provide all weapons and most gear. We also provide the first three sets of winter and summer uniforms and give you a yearly uniform allowance.
Q: I have some issues in my background. Can I still become a Dayton Police Officer?

Q: Does Dayton Police Department require a college degree?

A: Yes, we allow tattoos except on the head, face and front of the neck.

Q: Are there any career advancement and how long does it take to achieve them?
A: Yes, we have a wide variety of career advancement from Sergeant, Lieutenant, Major, Assistant Chief, Chief. Also including specialized career advancement units such as: K-9, SWAT, Bomb Squad, Detective for homicide, narcotics, special victims, Traffic Service unit, Hostage Negotiation and much more. Only 3 years as patrol officer with Dayton to be eligible for specialized units and only 5 years as patrol officer to be eligible for rank of sergeant.
