Essential Functions, Typical Duties, and Responsibilities:

Supervises police officers on an assigned shift; conducts briefings to provide staff with information needed to perform their job; conducts roll call; assigns daily duty activities; provides direction and guidance, as needed; reviews and approves officers’ work, including notes and reports prepared for shift activities, offenses and incidents, victim and suspect statements, and other related information.

  • Evaluates performance of police officers and dispatchers on assigned shift; writes detailed interim and annual performance evaluations; works with staff to resolve personnel issues; investigates staff on-the-job personal injuries; and ensures subordinates comply with town and department policies, procedures and standards.

  • Performs a variety of administrative duties associated with supervising a shift, including but not limited to: preparing reports, documenting incidents and maintaining records.

  • Deters and detects the commission of crimes and maintains law enforcement by patrolling throughout the town streets and neighborhoods in a police vehicle, police motorcycle, police bicycle and on foot; apprehends and if required arrests persons who violate statutory law and municipal ordinances.

  • Monitors radio calls and tracks personnel; communicates with radio dispatchers and responds to complaints, reports of criminal events, requests for law enforcement and domestic or public disputes; inspects troublesome areas and checks security of town business establishments.

  • Secures crime scenes as required.

  • Performs rescue functions at accident, emergency and disaster scenes.

  • Gathers information for criminal investigations; collects and secures evidence; testifies in court; enforces traffic laws.

  • Engages in public relations and community service activities and events to promote a positive image for the town and the police department; builds cooperative and collaborative relationships with the community.

  • Handles citizen complaints.

  • Participates in departmental training; maintains physical fitness; attends police academy classes and seminars as required; develops and conducts force training; assesses department training needs.

  • May assist in division budget preparation.

  • May assist in writing or revising current departmental policies.

  • Serves as project manager for implementing command staff projects.

  • Attends roll call to ensure two-way exchange of information.

  • Provides active and visible leadership to the department.

  • Conducts internal affairs investigations as directed.

  • Coordinates and follows-up with vendors and the town’s finance department for assigned purchases; receives and appropriately distributes assigned staff uniforms; inspects and maintains emergency locker supplies; prepares draft command staff memorandum; composes letters for command staff and town citizens.

  • May assist property officer, if required, with intake and output of property and evidence; enters property records data into databases.

  • Performs other duties as required.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Associate degree required
  • Virginia DCJS law enforcement certification
  • Minimum five years prior law enforcement experience in a Virginia agency with primary law enforcement responsibility, plus three years as a law enforcement supervisor at an equivalent or greater supervisory rank
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license with acceptable record

Due to the nature of a government providing services to the public all duties of this position are required to be fulfilled at the designated worksite in the town. No remote work is available.
