City of Marco Island Police Department Officer Trainee(s) position is non-sworn position providing for attendance of the State of Florida Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training Program, in order to pass the State of Florida Law Enforcement Certification Exam and complete all City of Marco Island Police Department pre-deployment training. Upon successful completion of the Basic Recruit Training Program, the Law Enforcement Certification Exam, and all City of Marco Island Police Department pre-deployment training, Police Officer Trainee(s) will be eligible for promotion to (Sworn) Police Officer status.
This is an entry level position to allow employment status while attending training. General duty police work responsibilities include enforcement of laws and ordinances, prevention, detection and investigation of crime, maintenance of law and order and other duties associated with the protection of life, property, and public safety. Law enforcement officers perform duties in accordance with Florida State Statutes, City of Marco Island policy and procedures and departmental policy and procedures. Position performs essential functions as outlined in the official position description and applicable to assigned functional area. Performs related work as required. Persons hired into this position will be expected to work on rotating shifts, including holidays and special events, as assigned or needed.
The State of Florida is offering the following:
- Applicants employed on or after July 1, 2022, and who have never been previously employed as a law enforcement officer in the State of Florida, will be eligible to receive a one-time bonus payment of $5,000 paid through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program. Recipients must maintain continuous full-time employment for at least two (2) consecutive years with no break in service more than 15 calendar days or must repay bonus. Recipients become eligible on the date they obtain certification as a Florida Law Enforcement Officer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work and may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects or materials (up to 80 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE STATEMENT
Every City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will be considered an essential employee during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.
