EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Performs duties and assignments in compliance with Johnston Police Department policies, procedures, and training and in accordance with federal, state, and local laws.
Performs general law enforcement and crime prevention duties; enforces laws and practices community policing; and responds to calls for the protection of life and property. Incumbents initially perform more routine duties assigned to positions in this class and work under close supervision. However, as experience is gained, incumbents are expected to perform the full range of duties as assigned with increasing independence.
Performs other related duties as required or directed
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent as well as meeting all of the requirements of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Applicants must be 21 years of age.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Have no felony convictions or crimes involving moral turpitude; misdemeanor convictions will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
  • Uncorrected vision of not less than 20/100 in both eyes, corrected to 20/20, normal color vision in each eye.
  • Normal hearing in each ear.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Ability to clearly speak, read, write, and understand the English language.
  • Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol or show a history of recreational drug use.
  • Applicants must not object to the use of force in the line of duty.
  • Capable of working for extended periods outdoors in adverse weather, unpleasant, or hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to push and pull greater than 50 pounds.
  • Ability to lift and carry 21-50 pounds.
  • Hold a valid Iowa driver's license upon hire.
  • Not show a significant history of driving related infractions and be able to safely operate an emergency response vehicle in hazardous conditions.
  • Successful candidates shall be required to reside within sixty (60) minutes response time of the Public Safety Building within 180 days of hire.
Applicant testing will be conducted on TBD. Details on testing will be sent out to those who meet minimum qualifications.
Finalists will be vetted through a comprehensive practical skills assessment in addition to physical fitness testing and the written POST exam. A summary of post-offer/pre-employment supplemental testing is below and additional details will be provided to candidates selected for further consideration.
CooperPhysicalAgility Test:
  • The physical agility test includes Sit-ups, Push-ups, and a One-and-a-half-mile run.
  • Physical fitness performance requirements are included in this chart (The agility test is a pass/fail exam; you must pass all three sections.
  • If you have taken the physical agility test within the last six months prior to our testing date, you may have the testing agency submit that data via email to JPDRecruitment@cityofjohnston.com, in lieu of testing again.

Written Exam - National Police Officer Selection Test (POST):
The POST test is a 75-minute timed test in four sections; mathematics, reading comprehension, grammar, and incident report writing. The minimum passing score for the Johnston Police Department is 70% on each of the four sections of this exam. Candidates who have previously taken the POST test and have a valid test score on file (greater than 70% on each section within one year from the testing date) with Standard and Associates may elect to waive the exam and use their most recent test score, or may elect to retest with the City of Johnston; however, the City will accept only the retest score. The Iowa Law Enforcement Academy requires the POST test. Failure to pass this test with a score of 70% or above will result in elimination from the hiring process.
OralBoardInterviews:
Upon your successful completion of the prior steps, you will be eligible for an oral board interview.
The interview will likely consist of several members of the police department, a Field Training Officer, and Supervisory Staff. The interview is comprised of questions relating to law enforcement. A prepared applicant should be able to reason through most questions based on reflection of the career choice and general life experiences.Background Investigation:The Johnston Police Department will conduct an extensive investigation of your background. A detective will contact prior employers, relatives, and references.
Information provided during these contacts may result in other individuals being contacted.
Your employment history, credit status, driving record, and other pertinent information will all be examined.
A criminal history check will also be made.Polygraph Exam:
As part of the background process, you will be scheduled for a polygraph examination where you will be tested in several different background areas. In addition, you will be asked to determine if you were honest with the background detective, truthful on your application, undetected criminal involvement, traffic history, illicit drug use, illegal gambling habits, and any other pertinent information discovered or revealed during the background investigation, including employment and military history.Psychological Evaluation:Each candidate is required to successfully pass a psychological examination (MMPI) and psychological interview to ensure that they possess the important personality traits needed to become an effective Police Officer.
Medical Evaluation:
As part of the hiring process, each candidate will be required to undergo a complete medical evaluation including a physical capacity profile, including the following basic testing:
  • Vision, height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, etc.
  • Complete lab workup
  • Drug screen
Academy:
Initial basic training will be conducted at an ILEA approved academy. Topics will include:
  • Law
  • Building searches Traffic stops Mental health
  • Accident investigations
  • Criminal investigations
  • And more
In addition to the educational components listed above, there is also a fitness component. Recruits will be tested regularly and must meet not only the academic standard but a fitness standard as well. The recruit will be housed during the week in dorm-style living quarters but is free to go home on the weekends.
Field Training:
After graduation from ILEA, you would be placed in the department's field training program. This is a 3-phase program where new officers will learn specifically how to become refined and more effective Police Officers. During this process, you will be challenged and evaluated by a field training officer who has received specialized education to train new officers and evaluate their progress. Once you successfully pass all phases you will be released to solo patrol.
