Job description

This is a clerical and technical position in the Police Department involving responsibility for a wide variety of activities including taking and identifying rolled fingerprints, taking DNA, and preparing follow-up paperwork. The employee also performs clerical duties. The employee works under the direct supervision of police supervisory personnel. Related work is performed as required.

  • Fingerprints individuals with appearance tickets, ordered by the judge, for pistol permits, employment, immigration, licenses, FBI background checks, requested by county court judges for out-of-agency arrests, for Sex Offenders Registry, etc.; using Live Scan and/or rolled inked impressions;
  • Evaluates and classifies fingerprints in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) systems in order to ensure accurate identification, and use the Henry alpha-numeric classification for interpretation and maintenance;
  • Assists Police Officers and other Agencies with fingerprint comparison requests from Vital Statistics and the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office, clears up active warrants, and notifies E-Justice, Courts, and other outside agencies of these results;
  • Corrects arrest information or transaction errors in the City, courts and E-Justice computer systems; Performs searches for information in numerous computer applications, documents, records and files and prepares statistical reports with this information;
  • Prepares supporting depositions for court presentation and criminal history files regarding fingerprint identification; and may testify as an expert witness in city, county and federal courts;
  • Collects DNA samples on convicted offenders, submits samples to E-Justice, and maintains records for compliance;
  • Photographs all City of Rochester employees for employee identification badges, sex offenders for the Registry, and retired Police Officers for HR218 permits.
High School diploma or GED PLUS
  1. Associate's degree in secretarial science or office technology AND two (2) years of clerical experience which include entering data into a personal computer using word processing software; OR
  2. Four (4) years of clerical experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Must be available and willing to work variable hours and days including week-ends and Holidays.
  2. Must have satisfactory police records and background check.
  3. Must pass medical questionnaire or examination and drug test.
Scopes / Subjects of examination: A test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills, and /or abilities in the following areas.
Name and number checking: These questions test for the ability to distinguish between sets of words, letters, and/or numbers that are almost exactly alike. Material is usually presented in two or three columns, and you will have to determine how the entry in the first column compares with the entry in the second column and possibly the third. You will be instructed to mark your answers according to a designated code provided in the directions.
Preparing written material: These questions test for the ability to present information clearly and accurately and to organize paragraphs logically and comprehensibly. For some questions, you will be given information in two or three sentences followed by four restatements of the information. You must then choose the best version. For other questions, you will be given paragraphs with their sentences out of order. You must then choose, from four suggestions, the best order for the sentences.
Understanding and interpreting written material: These questions test for the ability to understand and interpret written material. You will be presented with brief reading passages and will be asked questions about the passages. You should base your answers to the questions only on what is presented in the passages and not on what you may happen to know about the topic.
Pattern Recognition: These questions test for a knowledge of and the ability to recognize patterns. You will be asked to look at various patterns to identify and/or compare them.

  • The New York State Department of Civil Service has not prepared a test guide for this examination. However, candidates may find information in the publication 'General Guide to Written Tests' helpful in preparing for this test. This publication is available on line at https://www.cs.ny.gov/testing/testguides.cfm.
  • The Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County may have exam-related material and other branches.
