Job description

This temporary, unclassified, part-time position consists of a variety of non-hazardous support functions at the Glendale Police Department, while attending college. The position is exempt from Civil Service Rules and Regulations; therefore, Police Cadets may be discharged by the Chief of Police without a right of appeal.
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Ensures Department services are provided with the highest customer service and ethical standards.
Maintains property and evidence control.
Maintains inventory control.
Answers phones.
Maintains equipment.
Files, copies, and researches documents.
Conducts fingerprinting and photographic processing.
May conduct interviews.
Makes public appearances and conducts department tours.
Serve subpoenas.
May complete police reports.
Enters computer data into relevant databases.
May assist with traffic control, transportation, and parking enforcement.
Police Cadets may also be required to assist in the jail, at the public counter, in the radio communications center, and with minor investigations or other related tasks as assigned.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requiresKnowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:
Exceptional customer service practices.
Basic mathematical operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Ability To:
Provide exceptional customer service practices to those using the services of the Police Department.
Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
Communicate effectively in English.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Learn City geography and street layouts.
Learn law enforcement policies and procedures.
Read, write and comprehend directions in English.
Resolve interpersonal conflicts.
Utilize common office software and a personal computer.

Education/Training
High school graduation or GED or CHSPE equivalent.
Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university and carrying six or more units per semester, or nine or more units per quarter, with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.

Other Characteristics
Must be of 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
Must be in good physical condition.
Willingness to assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.
Willingness to work overtime as requested.
Bilingual abilities (speak, read and write) in languages spoken in the community are highly desirable.
Must be of good moral character, without past history of involvement in criminal activity or other unacceptable conduct, and without felony convictions.
License(s)/Certification(s)
Valid Class C California driver's license is required prior to appointment.

Special Conditions
U.S. Citizen or a permanent resident alien in application process for citizenship.
Personal Appearance/Tattoo Policy
While on duty, no tattoo or body markings shall be visible on the person. Employees are also prohibited from having or obtaining any tattoo or body marking that would be visible when wearing a departmentally approved class B uniform. Residence
Within four months of employment, all employees of the Glendale Police Department are required to live within a radius of sixty contiguous land miles of the Glendale Civic Center.

EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: Submitted Application will be reviewed to ensure applicants meet the minimum requirements. All qualifying applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process.

PRELIMINARY BACKGROUND QUESTIONAIRE (PBI): (PASS/FAIL) To determine whether the candidate meets the background investigation standards of the Glendale Police Department.

WRITTEN EXAM: (PASS/FAIL) To evaluate the candidate's ability to be successful in this position. Exam will be relevant to the duties of this position.

ORAL INTERVIEW:(Weight of 100%) To evaluate the applicant's experience, education, and general background for the position. Candidates must pass the exam component with a minimum score of 70.00% in order to be placed on the eligible list.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:A comprehensive background investigation will be conducted on all finalists, which will review and verify personal history including, but not limited to financial responsibility, criminal history, drug use history, driving record, and verification of application materials. Significant issues or omissions in the above-stated areas may be grounds for disqualification. Background investigation will include a polygraph and Livescan fingerprinting. TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the above stated examination components and/or weights. Should this be necessary, the candidates will be notified of the specific examination components and weights prior to the administration of any examination. The City of Glendale conforms with State and Federal obligations to make reasonable accommodation for applicants and employees with disabilities.
