Job description

FUNCTIONAL ROLE
A Plumbing and Piping Estimator creates timely and accurate estimates for prospective bids including obtaining inputs from vendors, subcontractors and field personnel. Additionally, this position is responsible for identifying and obtaining bid opportunities for the company services and targeting markets.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Identifies appropriate bid opportunities to meet volume and profit targets and in time to allow bid preparation.
  • Maintains up to date records of pending and open bids, including estimated award or start date, bid amount and status. Follows up on lost bids to determine reason.
  • Meets with prospective customers to gain insight into bid requirements gathering information regarding customer desires, scope, expected budget, potential snags, and other bidders.
  • Prepares detailed and accurate cost estimates for new bids, performing measurements, takeoffs, calculating material and labor costs, production rates, etc.
  • Submits estimates in time for detailed review and revision as necessary prior to bid submission.
  • Submits Bids in line with submission requirements and schedules.
  • Performs post bid analysis to determine why won or lost.
  • Upon award, verifies project scope and assembles official contract, drawings and specification documents.
  • Enters or updates bid criteria into internal computer software (system) which tracks estimating activity, bid success rates, and is used throughout the project if accepted by customer.
  • Coordinates with design engineers, customers and Project Manager, Superintendent, or Foreman to resolve contract, specification and job questions.
  • Establishes a detailed plan for each job in accordance with the estimate, contract requirements and prints to ensure a clear project budget, job work plan and schedule.
  • Performs pre-job briefings and participates in reviews with the Production Manager, Superintendent and assigned Foreman to assist in job planning and scheduling as well as input regarding tentative personnel assignments.
  • Maintains bid quotes and project folders.
  • From time to time assists/prepares purchase orders for purchases and other required information for Project.
  • Provides Project Manager with Quotes for materials or other purchases used in Bid Calculation.
  • Participates in Customer or Site Project Meetings, as required for scope or change order related items.
  • Promptly prepares, routes, and obtains approval for Change Orders reflecting customer-approved changes to the project scope or contract.
  • Communicates approved change orders to VP Operations/COO and President/CEO, including estimated time and material requirements.
  • Provides assistance to the Foreman to resolve technical, scope or process issues, as requested by the Project Manager or Department Manager.
  • Maintains or assists in maintaining computer records and job folders as specified, including all required documentation such as the contract, change orders, estimate data and other job paperwork.
  • Prepares required warranty documentation and respond to requests for warranty work.
  • All other duties and tasks requested and/or assigned by the VP Operations/COO and President/CEO.

COMPUTER | TECHNICAL SKILLS
Excellent computer skills required with experience in QuickPen a plus. Excellent computer skills and a very good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and an excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Ability to quickly learn new software and become proficient in using software is a must.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and Bachelor's Degree preferred; seven (7) years experience installing and Mechanical Systems in a commercial or industrial level required. Must have significant customer contact, project planning and schedule management experience. One (1) year of estimation experience preferred.
