Job Summary
The Plumber position is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining piping systems and plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers, and specialty lab equipment. Maintains potable water, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, grease traps, and medical gas systems. Responds to all water leaks and assists in isolating water lines and making repairs quickly to reduce infrastructure damage and hospital room down time. Repairs and tests eye washes and safety showers, hot water units, gas heaters, and checks for the safe operation of all. Clears clogged plumbing lines. Assists in estimating and maintains required time and material records for each job. This position also responds to plumbing issues at other sites throughout campus as needed when the assigned plumber to that facility is not available.
Experience and Education
High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years journeyman level experience as plumber in a commercial, institution or healthcare setting.
Must have current Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners journeyman’s licensure as a Plumber in appropriate level and field of work.
Job Duties
Installs, repairs, and maintains piping systems and plumbing fixtures, inspecting connections and other parts for leaks; replaces defective pipe and solders and/or caulks leaks and broken pipes.
Cuts, bends, and threads pipe, fitting valves and couplings to pipe sections by screwing, bolting, or soldering and wipes lead joints.
Installs pipe assemblies and plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers, emergency eyewashes, special laboratory equipment, water heaters, etc., roughing-in when needed.
Clears clogged lines.
Repairs autoclaves and other sterilizing equipment, hot water units, and gas heaters and checks for safe operation.
Assists in estimating and maintains required time and material records for each job.
Utilizes PPE and protects job sites from sewer line discharge/spillage.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Work requires the ability to use acetylene torches, pipe benders, cutters, threaders, wrenches, blueprints, and other tools common to plumbing trade.
Work requires the ability to plan and perform unusual and difficult assignments and needs to make decisions involving use of considerable ingenuity, initiative, and/or judgment.
Work requires alertness and close attention to detail to avoid injury to self and others.
Work requires proficiency in all phases of work performed.
Work requires walking, bending, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., pulling/pushing equipment up to 50 lbs.
Must be familiar with acid waste and purified water piping systems and components.
