Job description

The California Attorney General's Office, Land Use and Conservation Section, is seeking a purpose-driven, experienced paralegal to join our plastics investigation team. The rapidly increasing production of single-use plastic products has long overwhelmed the world's ability to manage the resulting waste. Plastic pollution in our oceans is expected to triple by 2040, and without significant action, there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. The Attorney General's investigation focuses on the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries' role in misleading the public about plastics recycling and the ongoing harm caused to the state, our residents, and our natural resources. The investigation is a first of its kind in the country. While the focus of this position will be on the plastics investigation, the section's practice also includes enforcing state housing laws, ensuring public access to California's waterways, mountains, and open space through litigation and client advice; conservation and expansion of state parks and other public lands for recreation and ecological protection; and protecting against wildfire risk. The section represents a variety of agencies including the Department of Housing and Community Development, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the State Lands Commission, the Delta Stewardship Council, the High-Speed Rail Authority, California's land conservancies, the California Coastal Commission, and the Department of Conservation.
The successful candidate will perform a wide variety of paralegal duties to assist attorneys in investigations and litigation. These duties include preparing subpoenas; interviewing witnesses; drafting written discovery and pleadings; preparing witness lists, exhibit lists and demonstrative evidence; collecting, reviewing and analyzing documentary and discovery evidence in electronic databases and in hard-copy form; preparing correspondence to outside agencies and the public; performing legal and other types of research; calculating and calendaring civil procedure due dates and response dates for pleadings, discovery, and motions; and performing other administrative tasks. Travel is required.
Our current work posture allows 100% telework, contingent on case needs.
