Job description

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.
The NYISO's Interconnection Studies department invites applications for a full-time Planning Engineer.
The Planning Engineer will coordinate, perform and review technical studies related to the interconnection of proposed new generation, transmission, and load facilities to the New York State transmission system (i.e., interconnection projects) ; review proposed project facilities, including the conceptual design for interconnection of the project to the NYS transmission system, and associated modeling data provided for the project; prepare base cases to be used in Interconnection Studies; provide technical coordination with others involved in the performance of Interconnection Studies including the project developers, Transmission Owners, consultants, and others as applicable.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Reviews proposed project facilities including the conceptual design for interconnection of the project to the NYS transmission system and associated modeling data provided for the project
  • Prepares base cases to be used in Interconnection Studies.
  • Provides technical coordination with others involved in the performance of Interconnection Studies including the project developers, transmission owners, consultants, etc.
  • Performs or reviews the technical analysis (power flow, short circuit, and/or stability analysis) for Interconnection Studies.
  • Evaluates and identifies any system upgrade facilities and/or system deliverability upgrades required for proposed projects and develops cost estimates for the identified upgrades.
  • Prepares and/or reviews interconnection study reports and associated documentation.
  • Leads and/or participates in project study meetings

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering is required; a concentration in power systems preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in the areas of power system planning or design, especially planning or design of transmission system facilities preferred
  • Experience with computer programs used in transmission planning or Interconnection Studies such as power flow, short circuit and/or transient stability
  • Working knowledge of PTI PSS/E, PTI MUST, PSS/E, ASPEN software tools preferred
  • Knowledge of reliability standards and practices related to power system planning and design.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical documents. Ability to write technical documents or presentations with tables, charts and graphs.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply advanced mathematical principles such as calculus, modern algebra and/or statistical theory.
  • Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations and proofs of theorems.
  • Intermediate competency in Windows operating environment using MS Office applications, e-mail and internet programs.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.). Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit and use hands to perform routine office tasks. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Contact with staff and public will occur. Travel may be required to attend and/or conduct meetings, conferences and training. This position may require work on nights, weekends or holidays.
The position will be filled at the level (i.e. Associate Engineer, Engineer, or Senior Engineer) appropriate with experience and qualifications.

Salary Range
$74,000 - $123,600 USD
