Description

Come learn a new trade at Nichols Bros. Boat Builders! We are seeking an Entry level/In Training Pipe Fitter to join the team.  If you have experience in pipe fitting, plumbing, carpentry or fabrication, and are interested in learning a new trade, this job is for you. 

Marine Pipefitters fabricate and install all the piping systems on the ship. They create pipe spools and other pipe system assemblies and fabrications for new ship construction, repair and other marine projects. The Pipe Fitter will create and install the pipes and tubes that course through a vessel like veins.  Pipefitting team members gain knowledge and experience in many systems, including heating and cooling, refrigeration, fuel, engine cooling, exhaust, bilge and ballast, and fire suppression.

What You Will Do

  • Forms, fits, and fabricates metal and nonmetallic piping systems in marine vessels to engineering drawing during all phases of construction and rebuilds from spools, installation and through sea trials.
  • Performs job functions on panel line, fabrication shop, on modular jigs, or on finished assembly.
  • Responsible for layout, cut, preparation, and final assembly of spools, piping systems in modals and final assembly.
  • Test piping systems for quality assurance, owner representatives and regulatory agencies.
  • Uses a variety of power and hand tools including pipe wrenches, union wrenches, threading machines, tube and pipe benders, etc.
  • Works from blueprints both in standard and metric to build complex piping systems, spools and foundations for piping system packages.
  • Tacks and minor welding with MIG and Arc Welding processes for tacking piping systems together and welding up hangers.
  • Uses various metal forming equipment such as sheers, band saws, rollers, presses, etc.
  • Works with Oxygen/Propane cutting torches as well as plasma cutters to cut pipe and plate in steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
  • Responsible for safe work practices and housekeeping procedures.
  • Work as a member of a team demonstrating skills to adapt, interpret and problem solve.
  • Responsible for expressing ideas concisely and clearly, both orally and in writing.

Qualifications

Must Have Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.  
  • Able to understand and perform basic mathematics.
  • Knowledge of basic hand and power tools
  • Familiarity or experience using tools in one of the following categories - pipe fitting, carpentry, fabrication, plumbing. 
  • Willingness to learn the trade and attend training as required.
  • Experience using Safe Work Practices.
  • Experience working around Heavy Machinery and Equipment and as a member of a team. 
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work at heights of 60 ft.  Must be able to enter confined spaces using a respirator and work in small workspaces at odd angles. 
  • Ability to communicate well with others and to take instructions and work as a member of a team.

 

Nice to Have Qualifications:

  • Some pipefitting, plumbing, carpentry, or fabrication experience.
  • 1-2 years experience with carbon steel, stainless, galvanized, copper or copper nickel.
  • Blueprint Reading Knowledge.
