Job description

The University of Minnesota Rochester ( www.r.umn.edu ) invites applications for a non-tenure track faculty position in physics for its undergraduate degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS). The position is primarily teaching-focused with the expectation of contributing to departmental and institutional service (90% teaching, 10% service), to start in Fall 2024.

We are seeking a qualified instructor who has significant interest in supporting student learning in a high-contact model inside and outside of the classroom and lab. This faculty member will work collaboratively and creatively with an established faculty team, teaching physics coursework to undergraduate health sciences students. The successful instructor will have experience in implementing active pedagogical strategies and supporting a diverse student body population as 39% of UMR students are students of color and 43% are first generation students. The instructor should be prepared to teach undergraduate courses in physics, with the possibility of teaching other courses in the Center for Learning Innovation.
Duties include both collaborative and independent preparation and delivery of course content in an interactive learning classroom and lab, grading, holding weekly hours in the Just ASK tutoring center ( https://r.umn.edu/academics-research/academic-resources/just-ask ), supervising undergraduate teaching assistants, facilitating department-wide data collection efforts that coincide with course delivery duties, participating in faculty governance, and other related duties as assigned.
The instructor will join the Center for Learning Innovation (CLI), an innovative, interdisciplinary department. The CLI coordinates the development and teaching of an integrated, writing-enriched curriculum for a baccalaureate degree in the health sciences. It promotes a learner-centered, undergraduate environment in which ongoing assessment informs pedagogical and curricular choices and is the basis for data-driven research on learning.
Position Requirements: A master's or doctorate degree in physics or a closely related field and knowledge of physics fundamentals are required for this position. The successful candidate will also have excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), a commitment to exemplary teaching, and experience teaching at the undergraduate level. Experience with interdisciplinary teams and knowledge in physics education research-based innovative instruction and pedagogy is preferred. The successful candidate is also comfortable working independently and within a team.
Continuing professional development participation is expected from the instructor and there will be opportunities to attend conferences, workshops, on-line tutorials, and to join professional development opportunities, and/or membership in professional organizations.
