Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner

Type of Employment: Full-time, 40 hours a week.
Contract Period: 120-days (6-months).
Estimated Period of Performance: 08 February - 30 July 2024
Estimated Salary: $110, 000 - $120,000/year.
WORKING HOURS
The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner will normally provide eight (1) hour sessions per provider, per day, Monday through Friday, excluding Federal Holidays. The work schedule shall not exceed 2880 sessions per 120 days. Work hours will normally be between 0600 and
1800, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. These hours may be adjusted to meet the needs of
the institution.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner will provide primary care to inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI), the Secure Female Facility (SFF), and the Satellite Prison Camp (SPC) as part of the Bureau of Prison Hazelton facilities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Physician Assistant
- Be a graduate from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
- or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
- Have successfully completed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination.
- Maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and re-certification.
- Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a physician assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
- Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
- One (1) year of experience providing mid-level provider services in emergency care, acute care, ambulatory/outpatient care, psychiatric care, and/or medical/surgical care
Nurse Practitioner
- Hold a graduate or higher-level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
- Have successfully passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
- Maintain status as a licensed nurse practitioner, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and re-certification.
- Must have a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
- Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
- One (1) year of experience providing mid-level provider services in emergency care, acute care, ambulatory/outpatient care, psychiatric care, and/or medical/surgical care
Preferred Qualifications
- Three or more years of experience in emergency care, acute care, ambulatory/outpatient care, psychiatric care, and/or medical/surgical care.
- Experience in providing healthcare in a correctional setting.
- Additional professional education and certifications such as advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), etc.
Attire
The contract employee is expected to wear professional clothing that is appropriate to the
correctional environment while on duty; business attire or scrub-type uniforms are approved. No articles of clothing worn by the contract employee will be of a khaki tan, khaki green, tan, dark green, gray, orange, or camouflage color or pattern. Footwear will be closed-toe, flat-bottom, and completely cover the feet; fluid resistance and non-slip soles are preferred. Protective vests will be supplied by the institution.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide mid-level provider services which include, but are not limited to:
- Comprehensive assessments and management of uncomplicated acute and stable chronic health problems of inmates.
- Assisting and working collaboratively with the physician in management of selected
- complex medical problems.
- Performing initial comprehensive medical and psychosocial screenings.
- Performing physical examinations and risk evaluations of inmates.
- Performing basic dental examinations and detecting abnormalities of the teeth and gums.
- performing mental health evaluations including the ability to screen for suicidal risk.
- Conducting daily sick call.
- Assisting the physician and other providers with procedures.
- Administering medications.
- Obtaining intravenous access for administration of intravenous fluids and/or medications.
- Providing a wide range of emergency services, in the absence of the physician, including primary care for trauma and life-saving procedures.
- Performing minor surgical procedures, such as incision and drainage, suturing of lacerations, removal of cysts, and removal/repair of ingrown toenails after consultation with the physician, prescribing medications and treatment for illnesses.
- Establishing diagnostic impressions and requesting appropriate diagnostic tests (e.g., laboratory, x-ray, visual acuity, electrocardiogram, etc.).
- Interpreting results and selected laboratory findings including, but not limited to urinalysis, complete blood counts, metabolic panels, and various cultures for bacterial infection and antibiotic susceptibility.
- Order and/or interpretate audiologic testing and screening of distance and near vision as well as colorblindness.
- Providing preliminary interpretation of radiographs, including dental radiographs, to identify gross abnormalities such as fractures, displacements, etc.
- Interpretating electrocardiogram tracings and having the ability to detect cardiac Abnormalities.
- Function as a member of a primary care team under the direction of a physician and in collaboration with other disciplines and providers.
- Entering pertinent clinical information in an electronic medical record system in a timely manner and following proper documentation procedures.
