JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Hours: Weekend Shift, Holiday Rotation
Summary of the Job:
Administers physical therapy treatments to patients, working under direction of and as assistant to Physical Therapist. Administers active and passive manual therapeutic exercises, therapeutic massage, and heat, light, sound, water, and electrical modality treatments, such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and hot and cold packs. Administers traction to relieve neck and back pain, using intermittent and static traction equipment. Instructs, motivates, and assists patients to learn and improve functional activities, such as pre-ambulation, transfer, ambulation, and daily-living activities. Observes patients during treatments and compiles and evaluates data on patients' responses to treatments and progress and reports orally or in writing to Physical Therapist. Fits patients for, adjusts, and trains patients in use and care of orthopedic braces, prostheses, and supportive devices, such as crutches, canes, walkers, and wheelchairs. Confers with members of physical therapy staff and other health team members, individually and in conference, to exchange, discuss, and evaluate patient information for planning, modifying, and coordinating treatment programs. Performs clerical duties, such as taking inventory, ordering supplies, answering telephone, taking messages, and filling out forms. May measure patient's range-of-joint motion, length and girth of body parts, and vital signs to determine effects of specific treatments or to assist Physical Therapist to compile data for patient evaluations.
PRN LPTA capable of Acute Care setting, including one weekend work every four weeks and minimum of one holiday shift per year. Occasional weekday shifts may be available.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in a Physical Therapist Assistant Program from an APTA accredited institution required.
  • Active or temporary Physical Therapy Assistant license from the Louisiana State Board of Physical Therapy required. Temporary license holders must obtain active license within 90 days of hire.
  • Current BLS certifications through any International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) provided courses such as but not limited to: Ochsner Health System, American Heart Association, and American Red Cross. The ILCOR course must include a manikin check off.
  • Working knowledge of computer software to include, but not be limited to: word processing and spreadsheets.

Physical Demands:
Must possess good physical health. Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Lifting at least 50 pounds is required.

Constant (67% - 100%) - talking, hearing, and seeing
Frequently (34%-66%)- NONE
Occasionally (1%-33%)- lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, climbing (stairs, ladders, etc.), balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, and handling/feeling
