Axiom is looking for a candidate to support the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) in maintaining current operational global ensemble forecast system (GEFS) codes and workflow as well as carrying out research, development, and operational transition of GEFS for future operational applications of the Unified Forecast System (UFS). The work location is at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) in College Park, MD.

Responsibilities

The candidate will perform job duties both in an independent and collaborative environment, applying innovative methods for the primary work areas. The candidate will work with others on a transition-to-operations goal in the EMC physics branch.

The successful candidate will work in the following areas:

  • Maintain, develop, manage the GEFS codes and its components and workflow to support GEFS developments and operational experiments.
  • Develop for next version GEFSv13 workflow which is a UFS-based coupled ensemble system.
  • Carry out experiments using different coupled ensemble prototypes and manage the model outputs from coupled ensemble prototypes
  • Work with the EMC Engineering and Implementation Branch (EIB) for operational transition of GEFSv13.

Qualifications

We are seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position, and the following qualifications are necessary for consideration:

Education

  • A Master's degree or higher in computer science, atmospheric sciences, meteorology, mathematics, or a related physical science field.

Required knowledge and skills:

  • Proficient with modern software development practices, particularly the GitHub/Git version control software and environment;
  • Advanced skills and knowledge of modern programming languages and object-oriented languages, such as Fortran and Python;
  • Experience working in a UNIX environment with advanced shell scripting languages and familiar with running complex jobs.
  • Experience in running numerical models on High Performing Computer (HPC) platforms using MPI, OpenMP, Slurm, LSF, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a team environment and communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Knowledge of earth system modeling and ensemble modeling.

Desired:

  • Familiarity with operational NWP and/or an operational forecasting environment.
  • Experience with UFS applications and coupled earth system models.
  • Experience in model testing and evaluation and/or knowledge of verification principles

Candidates must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder to qualify and must live in the US for 3-5 years prior to application (please indicate in your cover letter).
