Summary/objective
The Phlebotomist works under the supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) in collaboration with the providers and other healthcare team members and assumes daily department responsibility for sample processing, waived testing, phlebotomy, QC, other duties as assigned by CLS in clinical laboratory services and supports Orchard Hospital’s core mission to provide clinically excellent patient care.
Salary : $17.10 - $20.52
Essential functions
- Securing ancillary services of lab, x-ray and cardiopulmonary as directed by the Licensed Nurse.
- Vital signs and other systems monitoring set up as directed and component.
- Finger stick specimen collection and use of glucometer with deemed competence.
- Specimen collection and delivery to laboratory as directed.
- Answering of telephones and managing calls appropriately.
- Public relations and rounding in the waiting room per policy and procedure.
- Document patient information correctly.
Preferred education and experience
- Meets all licensure and clinical competency requirements for position including continuing education (waived testing)
- Maintains working knowledge to support regulatory compliance (e.g. OSHA, and other state/federal agencies), readiness for surveys, planned or unplanned and assists in training new staff as indicated.
Required education and experience
- California licensed Certificate Phlebotomy Technician (CPT1 or higher) current and in good standing.
- Current BLS certification.
- Prior hospital clinical laboratory experience preferred.
- Student or other customer service experience preferred.
Physical demands
- Be able to stand for prolonged periods of time.
- Be able to walk back and forth between the hospital and clinic.
- Ability to lift up-to 25lbs.

- Assist in observing patient for patient safety.
Competencies
- Organize daily/shift work load and prioritize patient samples/specimens per protocol/standard procedures with department wide support of department and organizational quality metrics, performance improvements and pillar goals.
- Obtain venous, arterial or capillary patient samples as indicated, incorporating age-appropriate care for patient.
- Collect, receive, and prepare patient samples for testing/analysis in the clinical laboratory or where indicated following standard procedure as outlined in department policy and procedures/reference materials.
- Assist with patient preparation for exam by obtaining vital sign and initiating monitoring as directed by the primary care nurse and assisting with the removal of patient’s clothing and growing of patients.
- Maintains a clean, orderly unit and efficient clinical area by assisting with the promoting workflow, maintain stock of forms/supplies and room turn over as indicated.
- Document patient’s belongings legibly and accurately and in a timely manner in the patient record.
- Assist with transporting of patient between nursing units and diagnosis areas of the facility to assist nursing units.
- Aid the nursing staff in providing for comfort needs of the patient; assist CAN and licensed staff, assist in retrieving patients from vehicles, when appropriate, as well as escort visitors to and from patient care areas.
- Assist in overserving patient for patient safety.
- Demonstrates effective communication with members of the health care team to achieve desired outcomes, attends and participates in all required in service training and mandatory meetings (75% staff meetings per policy).
- Support department budget, quality indicators, infection prevention and control, safety and compliance.
- Support departments standards of excellence to meet and exceed nationwide benchmarks for core measure, patient experience and unit specific metrics to support Orchard Hospital care culture of excellence.
