Job description

Concordia University Chicago (CUC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy. This specialized, interdisciplinary position will be responsible for teaching a wide range of Philosophy courses at the basic and upper levels. It will also include courses in the Honors Program, College of Business, and Classical Educator programs.

This position requires academic background in Philosophy, including teaching and research experience in the field. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Philosophy, but ABD candidates will be considered. Candidates from any subfield are welcome to apply, but a historically trained candidate is strongly preferred. Preference will also be given to candidates with prior experience with classical education/pedagogy, as well as those able to teach Latin.

The successful candidate must show a commitment to undergraduate student success, effective classroom teaching, support and growth of the department and the Philosophy program, and service to the university. Review of applications will begin immediately will continue until the position is filled. Projected start date for this position is August 2024.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Teach a variety of lower- and upper-division Philosophy courses, including those outside the department, such as Business Ethics.
  • Teach Philosophy courses in the Honors program, including Metaphysics, Ethics, Logic/Rhetoric, and History of Political Thought. (Note that Honors courses are taught from a classical and Christian perspective.)
  • Design new courses, revise existing courses, and assist in the review and revision of the overall Philosophy major/minor curriculum.
  • Support, or provide leadership for, the University's Classical Educator/Lutheran Educator programs, including teaching courses and advising students as needed.
  • Coordinate and supervise internships, study abroad, service learning, and other experiential learning projects for department majors and minors.
  • Maintain an active scholarly agenda, including membership in at least one professional organization related to philosophy and regular presentations at professional conferences and/or publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Advise Philosophy majors and minors.
  • Support other department and University functions through service, such as committee work.
  • Candidates must support and be committed to the mission and identity of Concordia University Chicago, a university of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS).

Minimum Experience Required: Experience as the instructor of record in philosophy courses at the undergraduate level.

Education Requirements:

  • D. in Philosophy required (ABD candidates will be considered)
  • Undergraduate certification or colloquy completion as a professional church worker in the LCMS is preferred.
