Job Summary
The County of San Diego is currently hiring qualified candidates for the position of
PHARMACY TECHNICIAN
The Pharmacy Technician's primary function is to ensure drug inventory is adequate to meet the needs of day-to-day operations, confirm drug products and corresponding barcodes are entered into the formulary database for patient safety, and monitor and communicate drug shortages with appropriate staff.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have had prior experience as a pharmacy technician in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Preferred experience would include but not be limited to: unit dosing medications; delivery to and from nursing units; maintenance and refilling of automated dispensing cabinet; maintenance of drug storage areas; optimizing medication inventory par levels to avoid stockouts and reduce waste; collecting and receiving up-to-date medication histories; insurance billing; and processing prescriptions and refilling emergency kits. Prior experience with Cerner Millennium in regard to supply chain, medication delivery and optimization; experience with discharge medications in Cerner Retail Pharmacy; and/or experience with BD Pyxis for drug delivery, reports and storage is preferred. Experience with 340B and insurance billing including Medi-Cal, Medicare, and manage care plans is also preferred.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Optimize inventory management with par level adjustments
  • Maintain good working relationships with key stakeholders
  • Purchasing duties
  • Ownership of inventory management
  • Standardizes communications with pharmacy staff and vendors
  • Packaging and processing medication orders or prescriptions in a licensed pharmacy
  • Assisting in the performance of pharmacy related duties
  • Participating in the triage of medication transport to/from the pharmacy to nursing units, clinics, and other sites
  • Filling inpatient and outpatient medication automated dispensing machines accurately and efficiently and preparing prescriptions
  • Verifying the correct prescriptions are given to the appropriate patient at the point of medication delivery

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Current certificate and registration as a pharmacy technician in the State of California (Sections 4115 and 4202 of the Business and Professions Code);
  2. AND, One (1) year of recent (within the past 3 years) experience performing the duties of a pharmacy technician in an inpatient hospital, correctional facility, community center, outpatient pharmacy or retail pharmacy

Working Conditions:
As a Pharmacy Technician, you may be subjected to patients with communicable diseases and persons that may be potentially hostile or violent. You may work with biohazards (i.e., medications and pharmaceutical sharps) and may be exposed to chemicals. You may be required to work in a locked down psychiatric facility.

Hiring Process:

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of background or other mutually agreed upon date
