Position Summary: The Pharmacy Manager is responsible for supporting the VP of Operations in managing pharmacy operations. This includes implementation and enforcement of policies and procedures, supervision and training of staff, inventory management, quality assurance and regulatory compliance. As a member of the Brooks leadership team, the Pharmacy Manager supports and facilitates an interdisciplinary team approach to the delivery of care. This includes a pharmacy environment in which collaboration is valued and excellence in clinical care, education, and research is promoted and achieved and evidence-based pharmacy practice is facilitated. Demonstrates a commitment to create a nursing culture to achieve higher quality indicators, elevate pharmacy services, clinical outcomes and patient care delivery systems. 
 

Job Responsibilities: Demonstrates competence when completing patient care based on the following: 

  • The complexity of the patient's medical condition and underlying clinical status.
  • Accurately enters medication orders on the computerized pharmacy profile.
  • Review's patient profile for allergy, drug-drug, drug-food, drug disease interactions, duplicate therapy.
  • Validates that all medication for patients of all ages is filled with the proper drug, dosage form, strength and quantity.
  • Contracts and confers with physician if there are any questions or clarifications needed in the processing or monitoring of drug therapy.
  • Identifies interventions on the computerized pharmacy profile.
  • Evaluates laboratory and microbiology data to ensure appropriate age-specific response to medications.
  • Compounds or supervises the preparation of IV admixtures, epidural pain, TPN and chemotherapy as required following aseptic technique and recommended safety precautions with the horizontal or vertical laminar airflow hood.
  • Ensures documentation of care is carried out as per department policies and procedures.
  • Recognizes, reports, documents and seeks appropriate intervention for signs and symptoms of adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, or medication allergies, as per department and hospital policy.
  • Consults with physicians and nursing staff members concerning the availability, dosage form, side effect and possible incompatibility of new as well as currently used drugs. Recommends formulary alternatives to prescribing physicians. 
  • Support and participate in the goals of the organization's quality improvement, risk management and patient safety program to include but not limited to National Patient Safety Goals and medication related initiatives.
  • Develop and document staff competency on an ongoing basis and develop improvement plans when deficiencies are identified
  • Effectively and proactively intervene in conflicts between pharmacy and medical staff regarding drug therapy issue resolutions
  • Maintain appropriate controlled substance records.      Work with the Pharmacy Director to identify and develop processes to meet or exceed all controlled substance diversion prevention and monitoring standards.  Participate in controlled substance reviews and audits
  • Comply with all regulatory standards.  Work with the Pharmacy Director to identify and develop processes to meet or exceed all regulatory standards.  Participate in quality or regulatory reviews and audits
  • Responsible with Pharmacy Director for staff performance evaluations
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of pharmacy operations and share clinical initiatives with Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator
  • Provide technical support in conjunction with Pharmacy Manager of Support Services for automated dispensing machines and other pharmacy computer systems.
  • Participate in the maintenance of pharmacy dictionaries including adding new drugs to the drug dictionary and Gold Standard formulary Charge Master Maintenance.
  • Participate in the education and reconciliation for admission and discharge medication reconciliations. 
  • Preparation and oversight of staff scheduling

 

Provides Direct Oversight and responsible for THE ACTIVITIES of the Pharmacy.

  • Guides Pharmacy practice and development to include the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the professional practice model, pharmacy education, quality improvement and infection prevention. 
  • Represents Brooks in the community, state and region of pharmacy leaders.
  • Participates in planning of physical facilities and utilization of space that affect management of the Pharmacy Practice.
  • Ensures a staffing system based upon patient and family needs, and types and preparation of workers for the in-patient hospital. (Pharmacists, pharmacy Techs and support staff.) 
  • Designs and recommends hospital-wide Pharmacy staffing standards. 
  • Plans for the utilization of personnel for maximum efficiency and quality of patient care. 
  • Oversees the management of all central, hospital wide Pharmacy functions, including PRN pool.
  • Maintains up-to-date job descriptions and performance evaluation criteria that define requirements, competencies, responsibilities and functions of the positions and determines their placement within the organizational structure and provides for remuneration based on performance. 
  • Collaborates with leadership in developing budgets 
  • Participates in intra- and inter-departmental planning for improvement of patient care.
  •  Oversees standards of safe pharmacy practice.  Collaborates with programs in implementing recommended standards of safe and effective pharmacy practice.
  • Interviews, verifies credentials and selects personnel for central Pharmacy positions.  Collaborates with hospital leaders in the selection of staff for key program pharmacy positions.
  • Promotes, transfers and terminates pharmacy employees.
  • Performs other functions related to this classification of job as assigned by the affiliated Director of Pharmacy and VP of Operations.

 

SUPERVISES, EVALUATES AND CONTROLS THE PHARMACY PRACTICE:

  • Works with the Director of Pharmacy to evaluate service rendered by Pharmacy including quality of pharmacy care, competency of personnel and efficiency of operation. 
  • Supports feedback system that encourages pharmacy staff to report concerns regarding professional practice or behavioral issues.
  • Assists in developing an evaluation/performance management program.
  • Assists in development of a pharmacy education program in collaboration with the Department of Learning.
  • Collaborates with the programs in controlling expenditures related to time utilization, personnel, equipment and supplies.
  • Participates in the development of specialty program policies and procedures related to pharmacy functions.
  • Investigates complaints of dissatisfaction regarding pharmacy service rendered and takes appropriate action.
  • Supports and facilitates interdisciplinary shared governance process. 

 

STAFF INTERACTION:

  • Makes decisions and takes actions that consider needs of the hospital pharmacy staff.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to the needs and motivations of staff and works to maintain friendly working environment.
  • Volunteers to help staff in other departments as well as within the hospital.
  • Listens to staff concerns and responds with empathy.
  • Supports interdisciplinary shared governance.

  • Consistently strives to understand, anticipate and meet the needs, expectations and satisfaction levels of patients and other "customers" and seeks feedback from other in improving overall performance of the Pharmacy Practice.
  • Supports a culture of safety and transparency to bring errors, inefficiencies and inaccuracies and potential solutions to the attention of Senior leaders.
  • Works with the Director of Pharmacy and VP Operations, Develops innovative solutions to departmental problems.
  • Identifies and implements methods of controlling costs or generating revenue while providing maximum value to both patients and hospital.
  • Maximizes efficiency in all departmental operations and measures progress against quality goals.

  • Attends training classes, seminars and continuously learns to maintain and increase job knowledge.  Willingly shares skills and knowledge gained with staff.

  • Maintains licensure and/or professional certification(s) (where applicable).

  • Determines qualifications and competence of Pharmacy staff.  Directs and oversees the following with Department of Learning:
    • Staff orientation to pharmacy practice
    • Staff mandatory competency program (CE's, CPR, Age, etc.)
    • Licensure
    • Clinical Ladder
       

Job Qualifications:  

  • Minimum of 2 year as a Pharmacy Clinical/Operation Specialist or 5 years of hospital pharmacy experience. 
  • Florida Pharmacy Consultant Certification required. 
  • Must have Pharmacy leadership experience.
