Internships are only open to Choctaw Nation tribal members currently enrolled in college
Job Purpose or Objective(s): Under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist: fills and dispenses prescriptions and/or medication orders from physicians or mid-levels. Operates Pharmacy department equipment. Acts as a drug information resource to patients, medical staff, nursing staff and ancillary department personnel. Will review patient charts for billing and claims data, insurance, audits, and will assist with medication authorizations reviews. Performs Pharmacy Intern duties as outlined by Oklahoma State Pharmacy laws.
This is an 8-week internship with hours M-F 8am-4:30pm | $15.00 per hour
Primary Tasks: Under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist:
- Assists licensed pharmacists in reviewing prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized prescribers to assure accuracy and determine formulas and ingredients needed. As designated by licensed pharmacist and within scope of practice: reviews and monitors drug therapy. Assists the Pharmacists with responsibilities in accordance with the organization's mission, policy and any applicable laws.
- Compounds medications using standard formulas and processes such as weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients.
- As experience allows: monitors all posting onto the patient profile in order that accuracy, drug allergies, drug interactions, duplicate therapy, rational drug therapy and incompatibilities may be realized and better patient care received.
- May enter data into the computer system such as patient, prescribed medications and cost and maintains patient profiles and charge system, if requested by the Chief or Assistant Chief of Pharmacy,
- Check patient medication cassettes prior to delivery to patient care areas to ascertain that the correct drug, dosage form, schedule and strength are being dispensed.
- Answers questions and provides information to physicians, nurses, patients and other health care professionals on the appropriate use of medications, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, storage, etc. Addresses complaints and resolves problems.
- May perform activities such as: medication reviews, performance improvement projects, and presentations to staff as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Skills and Experience:
MINIMUM
- Currently enrolled and in good standing with an accredited college of pharmacy
- Current Oklahoma Pharmacy Intern license.
- Ability to work with attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrates ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the hospital staff.
- Demonstrates ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as dosage calculations, formulation of pharmaceutical preparations and data analysis.
- Demonstrates ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Demonstrates ability to interpret technical instructions and deal with several abstract variables.
