Description
Position Summary
The Pharmacy Clerk for the NRMC Retail Pharmacy must be a self-motivated person to help assist patients and pharmacy staff. The primary responsibilities include but are not limited to answering phones, assisting customers at window(s), obtaining insurance & demographic information, and collection and documentation of payments. Will be able to work without constant oversight and has the ability to multitask in a changing environment subsequent to the number of patients at any one time. Will maintain the mission and core values set forth by Natchitoches Regional Medical Center.
Primary Responsibilities

  1. Cordially greets and receives clients, ascertain their needs and appropriately direct visitors and callers.
  2. Performs a variety of clerical duties including typing and scanning to help maintain efficient operations.
  3. Provide appropriate answers of numerous phone calls, or direct caller to the proper place.
  4. Obtain client payments, verification or patient eligibility, and records all pertinent insurance information.
  5. Helping to keep shelves organized and clean and assisting with inventory.
  6. Processes prescription sales using the POS system.
  7. Addresses customer's basic questions regarding wait times and medication in-stock position.
  8. Accurately operates and maintains a cash drawer via POS system.
  9. Maintains the waiting prescription bins on a daily basis.
  10. Upholds the patient's rights including privacy and confidentiality.
  11. Ensure documentation for all drug recalls, participates in inspections of drug storage areas, upholds pharmacy standards and best practices, and maintains security of all drug storage areas and confidentiality of passwords.
  12. Attends and participates in departmental meetings, in-services, and quality improvement programs
  13. Performs additional miscellaneous duties as deemed appropriate and when assigned by supervisor.

Competencies
  1. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate effectively in English (other languages desirable)
  2. Ability to concentrate when there are numerous interruptions.
  3. Knowledge of basic computer operation.
  4. Ability to use appropriate discretion in handling confidential material and information.
  5. Good telephone techniques.
  6. Ability to deal with public in a tactful manner.
  7. Ability to perform detailed assignments, work accurately, follow directions and assesses priorities.
  8. Good research, analytical, and problem solving.

Requirements
Required Education and Experience
  1. High school diploma or GED required.

Preferred Education and Experience
  1. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  2. Prior knowledge of pharmacology preferred.

Working Conditions
  1. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing IV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard, preparation of prescriptions). May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit dose-cassettes, and IV solutions. May require stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers). Sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) often necessary. Must be able to physically operate the equipment used for the job.
  2. Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment.
  3. Hazards: Potential for exposure to infectious patients or materials is negligible. Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapy, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions). Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used. Possibility of needle sticks and exposure to toxic or caustic or biohazard chemicals, body fluids, blood borne pathogens, an communicable diseases from either airborne to contact transmission, making it necessary that appropriate Personal Protective Equipment be worn, including gloves, masks, gowns, googles, ventilation devices, etc., as appropriate for every task with a potential for any of the various types of exposures. Possibility of assault and combative, violent, and abusive patient behaviors. Possibility of increased stress levels.
