Job description


The City of Cedar Park is seeing qualified candidates for a Permit Technician.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, receives, reviews, compiles, and distributes all Development Services Department applications and other supporting documents for proper content, completeness, and conformance with legal standards; issues permits as authorized; and acts as first point of contact for the Development Services Department and all development application related questions.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists the public and city staff with requests for information in person, via telephone and by email regarding development services, licenses, permits, applications, building and development codes; answers questions, identifying their needs and problem-solving and directs individuals to appropriate party if necessary.
  • Receives and reviews development applications from customers; assesses scope of project by reviewing documents such as project plans based on relevant permit requirements; reviews applications for completeness; educates customers regarding necessary permits and general code compliance of proposed projects.
  • Assists in completing development and permit applications by explaining requirements; assist and advises the general public in matters relating to development requirements and status of submitted projects.
  • Verifies that projects have obtained all necessary approvals; verify professional and contractor licensing.
  • Issues permits and certificates of occupancy, maintains electronic permit files, calculates fees, accepts payments, updates computer files, and maintains required documentation.
  • Assists with scheduling inspections as needed.
  • Accepts, collects, and receives payment; prepares receipts and validates daily credit card reports.
  • Prepares various statistical reports for department staff; prepares and reviews various reports for updating, monitoring, and tracking development records.
  • Serves as staff liaison between building contractors, architects, engineers, city department staff, and the general public.
  • Notarizes documents for public, city officials and employees.
  • Performs such other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • High School graduate or its equivalent, plus (2) years of related experience involving extensive public contact, preferably in the building or construction industry.

  • or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Valid Texas Driver's License, with acceptable driving record.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Notary Public Certification, or the ability to obtain same within one (1) year of employment.

  • Permit Technician certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC), or the ability to obtain same within one (1) year of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: operations, services, and activities of the Development Services Department and Building Inspections Division; basic development codes, including the International Building Code, and municipal code of ordinances; city government organization, functions, policies, and procedures; office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers using applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; and principles and procedures of record keeping and filing.

Skill/Ability to: effectively assist the public; prepare records, reports, and correspondence neatly and professionally; demonstrate proficiency in organization and prioritization of work; demonstrate proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and MS Office as well as general office equipment (i.e., copier/ fax machine, ten key calculator; type accurately at an efficient speed; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; demonstrate proficiency in communicating both orally and in writing; use excellent grammar and spelling; and maintain records and files with precision and accuracy.
